They called it offside by an inch but the VAR has the discretion to place the line anywhere in a 6 inch area on Laporte’s arm. So they can basically do what they want now with offsides.

If they drew the line according to the players’ feet it would reduce the discretion and more often than not give the attacker the advantage.

They shouldn't be allowed to use the lines at all. They should look with their eyes and if it's not immediately obvious, then the goal should stand. Or they should go with what the linesman decided. It's supposed to be for clear errors, not forensic investigation into every decision.

Why can't VAR ever decide a line is simply 'level'??? It's either ahead or behind. Has an offside call ever been declared level when using VAR?

End of the day its affected every team at some point this season.
One thing every fan, every player and every manager can agree on is it needs to be changed for next season. Its sucking the life out of the game as your first reaction every time the ball hits the net is look at the linesman, look at the ref, hold your breath, wait for the replay.
That's not how to celebrate a goal.

The law regarding offside: "The first point of contact of the ‘play’ or ‘touch’ of the ball should be used."

The correct freeze frame should have been a split second before this picture. A split second before this, Laporte would have been further out and the defender would have been further back.

The question is, was there an earlier frame they could have used.

This is an argument I can get behind. Until they’re running “offside cameras” at much higher frame rates and showing us the frame before and after (like cricket) then they need to allow a much bigger margin of error.

Holland already does with an “umpires call” type of solution.

But both linos gave them offside today and at least var gave us one back. Without it we score one less.

There are too many frames where the ball can be in contact with the assister where there are movements from the assistee to make it unreliable.

I’m more shocked by how few are seemingly aware seeing as it’s discussed on tv most weeks when these decisions occur.

Thats the thing. You cant seriously say that its offside. Could be, but could equally well not be. When in doubt it should NOT be called.

I understand the laws of the game, I also understand when we get fucked over. Even my Mrs said the line wasn't straight. The technology is not good enough to be accurate on tight calls and it totally spoils any enjoyment

Clear and obvious not an issue for offsides. We are told they are black and white decisions. Binary. Off or on

totally fictious of course, and try as I may I can see nothing from any governing bodies about the margin of error of the tech

I go back to my original point, city have had more goals wrongly chalked off by the mysterious man in the shed at Scamley Park than any other side. I hope somebody is keeping tabs....

Exactly.

Roll back to West Ham last season, Sterling goal ruled out. Being Sport went over that goal numerous times and showed when the ball was actually played and showed Raheem clearly onside! VAR said shortly after "they use the wrong clip, But it's a work on progress".

Yeah right, Over a year on a still brown envelopes been passed about. All of us know this title would be in our cabinet in January only for VAR giving the rags false hope.

The umpires call analogy is a good one tbh. At its best video technology is supportive of the referee on the pitch which they can call upon. The current system is a real mess and with multiple versions in play across the game, and no real momentum behind improving it, it’s not getting better
