The Tatton in Gatley was my local.

By the time it finally shut it's doors it had almost become the first ever 4 D cinema as the smell from the Indian restaurant next door was like smellovision . Watching a film there you were bleedin starving by the end of it.

Ah, the memories I have of that wonderful place!

I worked there from the age of 14 (child labour) until I got my first full time job when I was 18 (1991-95). Some of the happiest times of my life were spent with my friends and colleagues from the Tatton.

So sad that all that is left of it is the frontage! The major was a sight to behold, holding over 600 people, and going in the stockroom behind the screen was scary as fook to a teenager! It was so dark back there and there were all sorts of rumours of the ghost of the woman who had originally had the venue built! I didn't hang about when going to retrieve jumbo bags of popcorn, I can tell you!

My personal favourite was the minor, right at the top of the stairs, with it's slanted stage; had a great vibe about it!

And then there was the mini, which was the first provincial cinema in the UK to use groundbreaking rear-projection technology (the film was presented "through" the back of the screen, rather than from a projector at the back of the auditorium)!

Sad that it ended it's days like this: http://www.28dayslater.co.uk/forums/showthread.php/40044-Tatton-Cinema-Gatley-May-2009

How long ago was that mate ? I remember St Anthony's social club (a prefab).

Still remember the ABC Northenden, the Capitol one on School lane Didsbury, the odd one at the Forum, but best of all for me was 'tThe Tatton' in Gatley, always have and always will have fond memories as my Ma's first ever job was selling ice-cream in the isles at the beginning and during the intervals.

The Classic Cinema in Bury centre was a favourite of mine in the 1970's. I saw Vincent Price in the Abdominal Dr Phibes there. Not sure what it is now I haven't been to Bury for Donkeys years.

I was talking to an old guy once in Bury who said the town had over ten independent small cinemas in the 1930's.......I said "Never", so he reeled them all off one after the other.....he was right.
