Old Maine Road photos thread

I remember that game and what went on in and around the ground vividly.

I went straight to the game after being at football training for my youth club team that morning, my kit bag and all (none of this 'bags of a certain size only and we'll charge you over the odds for storing anything else' nonsense of nowadays!)

Approaching Maine Road I saw a huge mass of Liverpool fans on the way from Lloyd Street. They were kicking out at anyone nearby, whether City fans or not.

Once inside the ground, I saw Liverpool fans entertaining themselves with their usual jolly japes such as kicking and robbing from programmes sellers.

I made my way to meet my mates standing by the wall on the Scoreboard End which ran along where it met the Main Stand.. as a kid, you could stand on the wall and hold on by the spikes at the top to get a perfect view of the pitch.

I could see herds of Scouse scallies (mainly kids my age) charging all over the terrace before kick-off. One lad came up to me and told me to 'get off dere, laaa..' so I told him 'f**k off' and when he threatened to pull me from the wall I smacked him with my kit bag.. must've hit him with my boots, as he ran off crying!

The game was a tense affair, everyone around us complaining about Johnny Crossan being left out of the team (he left us soon after.. I was devastated!) and despite having the chance to win it at the death with a penalty, for some reason our new captain that day, Tony Book took it. He shot hopelessly wide and it ended 0-0! Still, we did end up as champions that season!

After the game it was a brisk walk home up Lloyd Street to Hulme, avoiding the Scouse scallies.. but to be honest, they didn't seem too interested in City fans, more with fighting the police.. 'Plus ca change, c'est la meme chose..' as we used to say in Hulme..!

I also remember the Everton Cup tie the year before and I loudly let their scum supporters near me on the Kippax that they were the worst set of supporters I'd ever seen. They were even fighting themselves behind the goal in the Scoreboard End, and torrent of racial abuse that Stan Horne was disgusting, monkey chants and all. In the years gone by I would say the rags were the worst lot, the lack of segregation not helping. Thank heavens those days will not be repeated.

I recall them throwing a mop on the pitch that game which they must have got from the toilets

Manchester City training. Monday is normally a day of rest for footballers- but at Maine Road, it was hard training this morning (Mon). Hard, because on Wednesday they play in the greatest cup Semi-Final to hit Manchester many years. Big Mal, comes off worst in this dual in the air, as George Heslep, gets up, above Mike Doyle and Malcolm Allison to this ball. December 1969
