The North Stand?

2/1/71 we played Wigan in the FA cup according to that site ....so maybe?

Was it the roof that was put on or the whole stand re built?
Yes, and if I remember correctly they over filled for that match. Apart from the crush the only other thing I remember was Derek Temple ex Everton trying his best but his legs had gone, a pale shadow of the lad that ran from the half way line to score the winner at Wembley.

Yes 71/72 season 3-3 v rags the last 63,000 crowd at Maine road, then the seats went in the North Stand following season and capacity down to 54,000.
Loved that one season in the North Stand, the atmosphere was so good inside the ground. We sang, we are the north stand, we are the north stand, we are the north stand Manchester, good old days.

Not the Ballet on Ice but I remembered a good few years later I was late getting to Maine Rd. Just as they were taking massive plastic sheets off a very badly frozen pitch, apparently the match was okayed by Torville and Dean. The reason I remember it vividly was Peter Mellor the Burnley keeper he was the image of Bert and I thought briefly I was in time warp.

The City Store. If I recall correctly Swales saw no commercial benefit to it and sold the rights off to some cigar chainsmoker called Eddie Fisher for £160k. Buying him out was one of the first things that Frannie did. I don't give a toss about what Mick Hucknall says except on this occasion when he said that City at that time were being run like a corner shop surrounded by supermarkets.

I remember him, dad knew him somehow, I think he played in a cup final for Fulham? (not dad, Peter Mellor :-)
