Old Maine Road photos thread

March 1970 v West Ham 1-5,Big Joe, Book, Doyle at back plus Mann or Pardoe they both played that day.
I do remember that match. A pal of mine was evicted by the police. He paid again to get back in immediately. After the final whistle, he was in the City Social Club saying how much he enjoyed the match. Explain that one! West Ham were really impressive that match.

City had a really tough European Cup Winners Cup match three days before, beating Academica Coimbra 1-0, and were probably feeling the effects of that against West Ham. City were in the middle of a bad run in the League losing five matches out of six plus a 1-0 first leg semi-final loss at Schalke 04. The exception was a 2-1 win at Old Trafford. Obviously City had their priorities!

City then finished off with a draw at Southampton, followed by wins at Leeds and Wednesday plus thumping Schalke 5-1 and beating Gornik Zabrze 2-1 in Vienna.

Billy Meredith far left bottom row and my nans favorite Max Woosnam in the middle with the ball, not much idea on the others without looking them up :-)
Woosnam looking even more like an ‘all rounder’ looking at the bulge in his trousers.

I know some City fans view him as a scab, but I’m not personally arsed about that. What a remarkable person. What a life he must have led.

We also won a League cup final in March, got the double over the Rags and knocked them out of the League cup semi final that season.

Scab? Woosnam? Meredith?
I seem to recall Woosnam crossed a picket line at some point. Can’t remember exactly when. I’m sure I’ve heard some City fans refer to him as a scab. They (if my memory serves me correctly) felt embittered by that, and maybe they were justified. Or he may have had his reasons. Have no idea of the particulars. Maybe I should have a quick look!

You sure it wasn’t a cricket line?!?

No you’re correct, it was around the time of the General strikes in the twenties.
He decided to drive a bus for his employer, Crossley Brothers, during the general strike of 1926 . Sorry but that’s scab behaviour and he was roundly and correctly scorned for it, especially by striking Mancunians who saw it as a betrayal

Bloody hell... 99 years after the event and the poor **** is still getting grief from the good folk of Manchester.
