Old Maine Road photos thread

Strangely, that section of Maine Road is the only bit I've never stood or sat in. Your post made me realize this.

Makes me think of the Charlton5-1 promotion game,I wasn't there, but the reports / memories of how packed the ground were are really brought to life when you look at pics of 'windy corner '
from the game.
Absolutely solid packed.incredible.
55k minimum. It was rammed. If it was 60k, I'd not question it. The noise was sensational.

All sat in their main stand : )

I sat on my hands until the third goal went in when I jumped up! Fair play to the Cockneys after the game - I thought I was going to get filled in but they all congratulated me for having the bottle to sit there on my own.
Ditto.
The 3rd goal was an absolute corker tho.Moulden at his very best, from distance.

Bobby Shinton.
Of all of Malcolm’s reckless buys that was arguably the most egregious. Daley was actually well regarded in certain quarters when we bought him and Robinson turned out to be a solid player, as did Mackenzie. Silkman was shite but he cost next to fuck all iirc.

Shinton was an absolute carthorse and cost £350,000 iirc which was a huge sum at the time. Equivalent of about £25 million today I’d hazard.

Malcolm’s judgement was terrible.

The only problem with Daley was the price tag. utd nearly signed him for £400k and we waded in with a deal of three times that much. There was too much expectation on his shoulders and there was very little money left to buy quality players.
Mackensie was mint but was traded in to facilitate the purchase of Trevor Francis.
I've got very mixed feelings about Allison. I was too young to see the team him and Joe Mercer built. His first stint as manager was shit. His 2nd one disastrous. Swales I just hate.

Malcolm said on the tv programme 'up front' he instructed TB to bid 400k at Daley cause their manager had been involved in a car accident and he thought daley might be got on the hop. He said he instructed TB to pay the 450k asking price should they pull their jib...then went on holiday...returned back to Maine rd to be greeted by Swales who delightfully informed him we had bought Daley..Malcolm asked how much and Swales told him, to which Malcolm replied ' i dont want him'.

Fair play to malcolm cause he did say this with Swales sat un the room...in fact Tony Wilson legged it over to swales sharpish and asked what he thought of what malcolm had said and swales replied ( drum roll) .....'no comment'

Yes I've heard that story. I haven't seen that interview but Daley didn't sign for City until early September of that season. I highly doubt Malcolm was on holiday.

Bringing him back was a terrible decision. As you say his judgement was awful. Without mercer to keep him in check it was always going to be a disaster. He was a great coach though.

Years ahead of his time, mate.

Thing is, we’d had a disappointing season in 1978-79 under Book but it was far from disastrous - we had a great season in Europe for example, and we were never in danger of relegation. There were some class players in that squad, but it had grown a bit old; it just needed tinkering with, not completely repurposing.

He was utterly reckless and set us back years, aided and abetted by Swales, of course.

Yep, getting rid of book and appointing Malcolm was really the start of our decline and yes Swales was totally to blame.
