Old Maine Road photos thread

I think Malcolm speaks with fork tongue.
He certainly is when he said the only player who cost a lot of money was Daley. Reeves was over £1 million and Robinson £750,000, both of which are more than we got for any of the players we sold - Barnes being slightly less than that, Owen £450,000 and I’m sure Watson went for less than that.

Possible...ive heard him tell the tale where the buy now price was 450k and the bid was 400k but that's just incidentals, his main theme was Swales bought Steve Daley and he had the bollocks to say it infront of him. He clearly stands on for cocking-up on his 2nd visit but didnt feel the need to swallow Swales's peccadillo's and Swales advicing who he thinks we should sign is well documented in the ' you won't like it, Asa Hartford' documentary.

Can remember when Andy Peebles was one of the few "celebrity fans" City had.
A very good DJ, who played good music, apart from his mainstream Radio 1 show.
Apart from Curly Watts & Eddie Large, cannot remember many big showbiz names who admitted to following City.

Who was the weird bloke who came on the Maine Road pitch at half time chasing an ostrich ?

Bernie Clifton used to dress up as a man jockeying an ostrich.

He also said it was an old squad that needed breaking up. Owen and Barnes were in their early 20s.

Years ahead of his time, mate.

Thing is, we’d had a disappointing season in 1978-79 under Book but it was far from disastrous - we had a great season in Europe for example, and we were never in danger of relegation. There were some class players in that squad, but it had grown a bit old; it just needed tinkering with, not completely repurposing.

He was utterly reckless and set us back years, aided and abetted by Swales, of course.
It doesn't help that Allison gets his seasons mixed up in that interview, but equally, we're all guilty of focusing solely on the Autumn of 78-79 and ignoring the calendar year, as we'd also finished the previous season going backwards with only 3 wins from the last 12 games.

Tueart had gone to New York, Bell was a shadow of his former self, Paul Futcher was struggling to adjust to the top flight and others were simply treading water.

The squad was undoubtedly ageing, but as you say, it needed tinkering (certainly in midfield where our goal threat was non existent) rather than a mass exodus

I must have heard at least 3 versions of the Steve Daley story but whilst John Barnwell had suffered his car crash in May, we didn't actually buy Daley until the following September so I refuse to believe that we didn't have more than one discussion, particularly as Wolves were also negotiating with Villa for Andy Gray

However I think the biggest problem was that when Allison returned to Maine Road it was only five years since he'd left and only eight years since we'd won two trophies in the same season.

Directors such as the starstruck Ian Niven had far too much influence and Allison was subsequently given far too much leeway based on nothing but raw emotion and nostalgic desperation

I’ve heard differing version of that story, and it’s entirely plausible of course.

Wonder if Daley would have been a far more effective player for City if he’d cost £600,000 instead.
Just wonder if Daley would have scored that diving header against wba if the sun hadn't been in his eyes!? You can see how low the sun is as the north stand spectators are covering their eyes
Could that have been the moment to kick start his career.....diving header at Maine Road...maybe

Edit. Just realized I've your post didn't include the match footage I was on about
Oops

I know the header you’re referring to mate as it was in that clip with Malcolm’s interview.
