He's a 21 year old kid, who two years ago had never played outside of Ukraine and one year ago his only additional experience was an underpar year in the Netherlands at PSV where he was relegated to the reserves.
Then this past year, despite all that, he shows the character and the ability to somehow convince the manager with arguably the highest bar for his players in world football to include him in an unorthodox position in a team looking to compete at the absolute highest levels in world club football.
Whilst I admittedly rate him higher than some, I think due to the limited nature of his appearances in a clearly unfamiliar position have absolutely opened the floor to a fair debate about his ability. All things considered I thought £16m was fair considering his lack of a true portfolio of performances.
But the crucial thing with Zinchenko (if he stays), much like Delph, is that he has a value to the squad beyond his footballing side. As Pep would say, he has personality. Personality to fight, be humble, work hard, be competitive, and win. Having an ultra determined youngster like Oleks nipping at your heels constantly will keep many of our more senior players at their sharpest. Also, look at the improvements he's made as a footballer this past year.
I don't think it's a lack of ambition either if he stays. You have to think that in his mind, this might be his last chance to play for a top club. It might not of course, but maybe that's not something you can take for granted. And at his age, maybe he thinks he might as well stay and fight and give it everything to possibly part of something special. That way if he doesn't quite make it he goes out more on his own terms. And if he does..
