No player is perfect, but any idea that there is not a single midfielder in the world we could sign this January window that could help out our midfield short term without being an awful signing long term is laughable. Just my opinion :)

We've been the best team domestically for the past 4 years and probably the best in Europe too. We need as close to perfect as possible. It's the critical position in Pep's team. We can't just "make do", otherwise Nunes would be playing there or O'Reilly would have been tried there. It doesn't have to be perfect right now, but it has to be a player that is displaying signs that they can hit those levels or we'll be in the same boat in the summer and on a rag style trajectory.

There's a very limited number of players who are good enough. Some are different to Rodri and would offer a bit of a stop gap and then be able to play alongside him. But we could all throw a list of names together and I reckon you'd get 2-3 that the majority of people on here would support us buying. And then you factor in actually buying them, this month, and you're really struggling.

For City to pull off the right signing in the middle of the park this month it's going to take one hell of a negotiation and they'll have pulled off a masterstroke. And then we can sit back and slag them off for not being good enough until the new season.

I have zero issue with their stance. We did the exact same with Alvarez, and that is a benchmark for a price. Any difference in 'prestige' between the two players being offset by the fact it is the January window.
Yup, mid-season adds its own complexity, especially if the player is valued highly by the selling club. However, City still need to act responsibly.

If he's the player we want, Frankfurt get within an acceptable margin of what they want & the player wants to come, a deal will be struck when everyone's demands & an acceptable purchase price align.

Pep has accepted this situation is on him, as he was given the opportunity to start our squad rebuild last summer & declined. I've not written off this season, but I see it as one where we commence the task of major restructuring.

If we have to take a step backward, so we can take several steps forward next season, so be it. Our major target this season is a top 4 finish which I believe is still achievable.

My main take out of all of this is that Pep has learned his lesson going forward. He knew our squad was ageing, & now accepts the situation we find ourselves in, is down to him not recognising the devastating effect losing Rodders for the season would have on City.

We need a blend of players in their prime & talented youngsters shadowing our fading Superstars, so we can progress the next iteration of Guardiola's Manchester City squad.

It's gonna take time & I'm pissed off about us not acting sooner, but it is what it is. At least there's a broad acknowledgement of what needs to be done to rectify the situation.

Of course I can (if it happens). I don't think people seem to know the difference between a summer window and a winter one. Name me a January window when we have signed 3 players commited to other clubs, to come into the first team. On top of Echeverri also coming in and Bobb returning from injury. That's a big big boost to the squad.

Look I don't disagree we need a DM one bit, or even that it should be the first thing to happen this window. But to assume the club haven't thought about it and aren't trying is just daft mate. We couldn't find one in the summer, it is even harder now in January. I think we may have to come to terms with the fact we may not sign one in the next two weeks.

Still won't be a failure of a window, not if we sign other players we also desperately need, particularly with such promise and demand.
Now that’s a good sensible post.

I think some on here should think back to 3 May 1998, then they would have something to moan about. It is great that I read all of the inside information about the fact we only started looking for a midfielder on January 1, and the club should be ashamed of themselves.

Unlike the scum, we don't just pluck some known star that will never gel with the team, and look how they are fairing. The arse manage to buy good players every season, but they are still no closer to winning the title. I have read multiple comments about why didn't we get Rice, what about Sanchez, Fred, De Ligt and rat face were wanted by posters on here, there are a multitude of players gone to those two clubs that many on here lusted over, but I would rather be in our position.

Our club identifies not only quality players, but people who are humble and will totally gel with the squad, which is why they take so long to identify them, and I bet there have been loads that we have passed on. Yes we have had a few like Phillips that fitted in to that role, but he just was not good enough to deliver what Pep expected. Jeez we haven't had many failures under Pep have we.

We have won everything over the past few years, and I will give my club of 54 years a bit of slack, it is know wonder that they have hit the wall after so much success. I am sure that they have people in the pipeline, and are smart enough to keep it under wraps, jeez how many times have we seen the rags gazump us in the past by paying over the odds.

I trust the directors and Pep to identify the right players, jeez he is the best coach in the World. I will accept one bad season, because unlike the rags, it will not be followed by another twelve. I remember clearly 3 May 1998, it was my lowest point as a supporter, I will not take for granted our success, I will not criticize the people who run our club, and I wholeheartedly trust them to deliver.
A really good post my friend.
