They were seeing each other were they not so they oozed chemistry same can be said for couples like bogart and bacallHarrison Ford and Carrie Fisher.
As it happens we're watching Grace & Frankie and I find the chemistry between Fonda & Tomlin quite impressive, even more so when you consider their advanced age perhaps. You'd be fortunate to reach their age and be that lucid & active

The affection they had for each other shone through..
The original double act, perfect timing, no swearing and very funny..
Delivering the piano up a million steps to the house on the hill was some of their best work..
