Best thing about these old aerial photos IMO is the near absence of cars. You see a few but presumably working ones, e.g. delivery men etc. the roads are clear, wide almost inviting the future to come asap.

Tough times back then but one thing I always noticed from the stories of my parents and grandparents (in Cork but I'm sure true of right across Ireland and Britain) was that it sounded full of fun and humour and love. Sometimes I think we forget that we are the same species in history as we are today (I do sometimes anyway). Things around us changed but emotions haven't. Old photos are full of wonder to me because of the people in them.

At least future generations have videos to time travel. They won't have to imagine much but what a gift it is for them to see back in time.

Going through some old family stuff and got hold on my Nans Birth Certificate and found she was born on Thornley Street in Bradford in 1911.

I then used the link below and the geographoca 1960 map that can be overlayed on todays map and discovered that the street is where todays modern day Summerbees Bar stands at the Etihad.

Interesting to look at the map for others im sure so posted the link below.Shame it does not cover the whole of Gorton,if anyone has a similar map of Gorton to Denton can you post a link also.

Fascinating stuff generally as well as round the ground.

The weather doesn't look promising but this will keep me quiet for hours if not days.

When I told my wife that her grandfather was married at Christ Church, Bradford (I was doing her family history), she assumed it was in Yorkshire. Despite having lived in Manchester, she never knew that the place existed. But, then again, she used to live near Maine Road & used to wonder how the place got so busy at times, until she dropped me off there the first time.
