One for the interweb techies

Run the internet troubleshooter. Press start, type "find and fix network problems", press enter, go through that.

No joy?

For that last one, windows will probably install a driver when you restart, don't worry about finding a specific one yourself.

Still no go?

Press start, type "cmd". see the option on the right that says, run as administrator. click that. You'll get a command line window. type "sfc /scannow" and press enter. if it says it finds errors, run it again, until it says it finds no errors.

when you've got a 'found no errors' from sfc, type "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth"

wait for it to finish. restart.
No one who understands the slightest thing about technology should be using Windows.

Sounds like your wifi card, have you tried to see what happens if you plug it straight into the ethernet port?

If the computer is old and you're using wifi its likely to be using the 2.45GHz band which is very prone to interference. Few options either :

1. Try changing the frequency of the 2.45GHz WiFi channel on the router which you can do in the admin page which should be accessable by typing in the address of the router into the internet browser. Normally its 192.168.0.1 by default.

2. Buy a 5Ghz wifi dongle.

3. Go for a wired connection. If the router isnt in the same room buy a couple of ethernet over power plugs, which assuming you are on the same electrical wiring ring within the house should work well. Unless you want the really fast ones you can pick them up cheap on ebay.
