Size matters, especially if you’re not that 1 in a million who can be a David or Bernardo Silva.
If his name was Oscar SILVA, then maybe! ;-)
Physicality has GREATLY improved in the City team and we are a much bigger, stronger team than we had been. It is becoming increasingly important as technical ability is a basic requirement to be in this squad.
I’ve been around and around with a few on this Forum that TECHNICAL ABILITY is #1 and increasingly the PHYSICALITY to compete against the increasingly physicality of others is becoming ever more important!
Rodri & Stones in midfield with a back 3 of any of Walker/Dias/Laporte/Ake/Akanji is a big strong defensive unit. Then, upfront we have the biggest, strongest unit in the League complemented by skillful creatives that walk into any team in Europe.
Unless you can show yourself to be a Silva, Mahrez, Foden, then you’re struggling at the Elite level. One only needs to look at a Grealish to see that if you’re not topping the tape at 5’11” or bigger, you have to be both strong on the ball and protective of it against big, strong, fast and often brutal defenders.
Our League, and possibly the Bundesliga, is the most physically demanding League in the world, and we certainly play more games than anyone else. That requires a specific skill set that elicits comments like “I’m not sure my body can take another season in England,” and players leave for physically less demanding shores.
I hope Oscar, and all the Academy talent, can fill out the First Team Squad in the coming years, but you are going to have to be a special, special talent to do so…especially if you are physically smaller than average.
I look at the spine of our team and think it’s hilarious that our Goalkeeper is the little guy in the mix!!!
And, anyone who doesn’t think that Rodri has not secured almost God-like status in midfield has simply ignored the fact that as he has matured into his role in this team, and cemented himself as the #1 in the world, he has lost weight while gaining strength, agility and speed! UFB for such a big unit!!
