City had never played in Europe (maybe the first round European Cup defeat three days before?) when the Red and Black stripes kit was first introduced.

It was certainly introduced due to the influence of Malcolm Allison.
 
1997/98 Nationwide League One Kappa away match shirt, worn only three times during the League campaign at Ipswich, Crewe & Stockport. It would also make an appearance during pre-season fixtures at Burnley & Falkirk but without the Nationwide patches.
