Don't have a heart attack it's fukin shite
Yea, lifting weights is massively beneficial. Get doing it. Honestly, it’s good for you at any age.
Deadlifts, squats, cleans, bent over row, chest press, shoulder press. You don’t need much else. Two of those a day, twice a week, with a day’s rest:
Mon- deads+shoulders
Tue- cleans+row
Wed- squats+chest
Thu- deads+shoulders
Fri- cleans+row
Sat- squats+chest
Sun- rest
Even just doing each of those once a week is good enough, and much better than never.
The worst things humans can do is become sedentary. Even at 80, waking up the stairs (never mind getting up off a chair or bending over to get something out of a bottom cupboard) should not be hard work.
Walk, run, drink plenty of water, plenty of vitamins and minerals from a good range of veg, roots and fruit, don’t eat too much sugar, get up early, make the most of days, sleep well, sleep in the afternoon for half an hour if you ever get the chance…
This is the same for teenagers as it is 80 year olds. Age doesn’t matter. Live well!
If we all lived our lives well, our NHS wouldn’t be such a state. Yes this shit govt are massively to blame but I put 50% of the blame on the unhealthy-by-choice n’all.
Look at the amount of people who died from Covid in the most unhealthy countries… the highest rate of smoking and alcohol consumption is Eastern Europe and 15 of the top 20 for Covid deaths per million are Eastern European countries and then the USA and UK are in there due to having the highest rates of obesity, heart disease, diabetes etc. that come with poor diets and sedentary lifestyles.
You don’t need to go heavy, you don’t even need to have anything in your hands for a lot of them. You can do many of these movements at home without any weights at all. In fact I’d recommend that to an older person: do the movements of deadlifts, squats, cleans etc. with just your body weight. With that routine, you can't possibly be going heavy.....its far too much.
You'd be better doing a PPL and training hard.
I thought you were way over 50 ??? :)Take up a sport if you can. Walk more and regularly. Reduce alcohol consumption, eat a more balanced diet and eat less….
Weights are a great idea. I try and make the gym 3 mornings a week if I’m not traveling.
I was 50 end of last year and I do all the above and think it helps quite a lot.
No, only Manchester residents over 60 qualify.Do you know if that covers Stockport as well?
The facilities at East Manchester leisure centre are superb AND mcfc paid 5 million towards it...you don't hear that...I recently found out that all swimming pools in Manchester are free to use for residents who are over 60 yrs old.
So I now go swimming once or twice a week.
I've had one visit to North City (Harpurhey) leisure centre and four visits to East Manchester leisure centre(Grey Mare Lane).
I prefer East Manchester leisure centre as it has a small pool for non swimmers, so I can take my 4 year old grandson with me and he can have a swim around with his inflatable armbands on.
I have found that an hours swimming makes me feel better and has helped ease the pain in my sore back.
Any kind of exercise is good, walking, cycling etc. If lifting any kind of weights, it may be wise to have some advice first as you have a hiatus hernia. Good luck in what you decide to take up.What have you started doing later in life that you've actually noticed has improved your health?
Recently had the camera down and told i have Hiatus Hernia and Barrett's so need to find gut friendly food,
especially an alternative to my addiction of crisps.
Starting the day with warm water and ginger now instead of 3 coffee's as a start.
Read a lot it's recommended to start lifting weights after fifty.?
Any other tips.
Yes, I noticed that the Aquatics Centre reopened on 26th June which is my birthday, so it stuck in my memory.East Manchester is great & the staff there are really friendly.
If you feel up to it, give the Aquatics Centre a go when the pool is in 50m mode (itt is often split into 2 25/23m pools).
Swimming 50m lengths is hard work, but it really works your heart & swimming in the Commonwealth Games pool makes you feel a little bit elite!
Thank You HRH Sheikh Mansour. The facilities at East Manchester leisure centre are superb AND mcfc paid 5 million towards it...you don't hear that...
I didn’t know that, thanks for the information. Bluemoon is great for info:)I recently found out that all swimming pools in Manchester are free to use for residents who are over 60 yrs old.
