Own up

Swales was well past his sell-by date and was dragging us down. Once he was one of the FA fat cats his only interest in us was to ensure he stayed to maintain that position.

I firmly believe Franny had the best intentions but the damage Swales inflicted on us was far too deep to repair easily.

Didn`t want swales, Franny came in with big plans and ideas. The idea to bring in Alan Ball as manager ranks as one of the worst days as a city fan, I was so sure he would get us relegated, and he did.

I was sucked in to the FWF because I knew Swales had to go but I have to admit feeling really guilty about it when his wife was talking after his death about how it had affected his health.

I had a strong involvement with the FWF Campaign group... went to all the meetings, knew all the "backers"... I was absolutely desperate to see Franny as Chairman.

Within two years of his takeover, the same people who had backed him were campaigning against him strongly! And I have to admit that once again I was very much involved!

Talk about being a fucking jinx...

But I heard lots of stories about Franny's time at City, with his mate bally, and none of it was ever any good.

But for a short period Franny, who I had conversed with and heard all his plans, had me eating out of his hand.

I learnt a lesson after Franny had gone... and that's to never totally trust a "business man" again!

I know I'm not going to be popular for this, but ... I felt sorry for Swales at the time. He was a genuine City fan who threw everything into trying to over-take United and ended-up disappointed, disillusioned and hated by his fellow fans. He died that way and it's a sad ending in anyone's book.
I know his "time was up" but the way he was driven-out, with so much personal hatred toward him, was a bit shameful, I think.

I also have to say that I was never sure about Frannie ... it felt at the time like he was pushed into the takeover by the newspapers and all the hype .. some of his interviews with papers at the time felt a bit odd / staged ... and he always seemed to think a lot of himself and be very critical of City.

He promised us all an end to the dodgy behind-the-scenes dealing that had plagued the club for years ... but his first move was to pick his old school-mate Alan Ball, to run the team.

I've been following City since the 70s and Alan Ball is the only manager who, in all that time, I knew for a fact was going to be a disaster. All the others I could see some redeeming feature in, and so gave them the benefit of the doubt. But Alan Ball's managerial record started-out as diabolical and just got worse. I don't know what the opposite is to the "Midas touch", but he had it.

Amazingly, he's also one of the few managers we haven't sacked ... if I remember right, he resigned on us (!!) ... and Frannie then spent hours personally trying to talk him into staying (!!)
So personally I think Frannie was a major let-down.

When did you all start to realise that we werent going forward with franny ? i too was forward with our old pal francis but as mentioned too many times on these threads "typical" city kicked in, but hey ho its always been a great ride in for a penny in for a pound and now its billions

Franny. I think he tried to run the club like one of his businesses ie get the cashflow sorted and then spend the profits. Unfortunately he had to invest in the players, which he didn't so. Still my favourite footballer when I was a kid though.
