I know I'm not going to be popular for this, but ... I felt sorry for Swales at the time. He was a genuine City fan who threw everything into trying to over-take United and ended-up disappointed, disillusioned and hated by his fellow fans. He died that way and it's a sad ending in anyone's book.
I know his "time was up" but the way he was driven-out, with so much personal hatred toward him, was a bit shameful, I think.
I also have to say that I was never sure about Frannie ... it felt at the time like he was pushed into the takeover by the newspapers and all the hype .. some of his interviews with papers at the time felt a bit odd / staged ... and he always seemed to think a lot of himself and be very critical of City.
He promised us all an end to the dodgy behind-the-scenes dealing that had plagued the club for years ... but his first move was to pick his old school-mate Alan Ball, to run the team.
I've been following City since the 70s and Alan Ball is the only manager who, in all that time, I knew for a fact was going to be a disaster. All the others I could see some redeeming feature in, and so gave them the benefit of the doubt. But Alan Ball's managerial record started-out as diabolical and just got worse. I don't know what the opposite is to the "Midas touch", but he had it.
Amazingly, he's also one of the few managers we haven't sacked ... if I remember right, he resigned on us (!!) ... and Frannie then spent hours personally trying to talk him into staying (!!)
So personally I think Frannie was a major let-down.
