"Apparently he was famous..."
Had that t-shirt the executioner one but mine was black .I was 14 or thereabouts in the summer of 1980 and a new lad on the estate invited me round to his house to listen to some records. I was only ever into football but thought what the hell why not. That day changed my life forever. He played me Pink Floyd, Rainbow, Scorpions, Motorhead, Rush and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath by of course Black Sababth. I was instantly blown away and saved every penny I could to buy those albums and I still have them today.
I managed to get a large print of the Sababth Bloody Sabbath album cover and it adorned my bedroom wall with other posters of metal bands alongside my beloved City posters. In my late teens I went to metal pubs, clubs, gigs and met some amazing friends that I still see today. It was a community that I felt welcomed me and I never felt intimidated to be anything other than myself, alongside other spins off of the scene goths and punks. In the same way being a City fan is amongst other City fans and that feeling of togetherness.
However the Metal scene for me always felt stronger. Maybe because back in the 80's you would run the gauntlet in town of being callled a smelly, a greabo, wash your hair and a hippy. Infact Donald and the Maine Line Motorway Service Crew brought me back from Middlesbrough after being arrested in 84' and made me sing 'hole in my shoe' by Neil from the Young Ones. Having long hair was primed for a piss take.
I first saw Ozzy live in 1983 and on about half a dozen occasions since. Everyone knows the stories about him, they're legendary and it has to be said fair play to Sharon for cleaning him up and arguably saving his life many years before. I met my wife at a metal pub and like city metal has been a constant in our lives. I wore my Ozzy Speak of the Devil Tour shirt to her house when I first went to meet her parents. I had no idea they were very strong Irish catholics but Ozzys black magic must have worked as we've now been together for 41 years. Two weeks ago both my daughters and their husbands came round to our house and together we watched Ozzys final gig and now my new Grandson only 4 weeks old wears a Baby Sabbath vest because his Mum and Dad loved it.
Heavy Metal lost its Prince of Darkness today and the nation lost a somewhat strange and most unexpected iconic national treasure. These photos are of my treasured 1982/83 Speak of the Devil Tour shirt. RIP Mr. O.

I never thought he'd make it beyond the 1980's to be honest, and he still would have been an absolute legend. To make it 45 years beyond 1990 is some achievement after what he put his body through in his early years.RIP Ozzy... Let's face it, he lived 40 or 50 years longer than most of us probably thought he would.
A sad day.
