And that should be reason enough for us to keep him and play him. Probably won't be though.

Hopefully we'll buy a specialist DM to compete with Fernandinho, and then either have Herrera or Luiz as backup to them. I've got nothing against Danilo, but I'd happily see him sold if it meant Maffeo getting a chance with us.

I agree with the Zabba comparison, but is Zabba what Pep Guardiola would want as a fullback ?

When he commented last season that basically he 'can't' do what Pep requires & was leaving, I'm not sure it's just an age thing, I think it's more that Zabba & possibly maffeo, are more 'traditional' fullbacks & what Pep wants is a midfielder or winger who can also defend.

I think a 27/28 yr old Zaba would have been a fantasic Pep player.Some of his overlaps and ability to get up and down the wing were a thing of beauty.

I just don't think personally that Zabba was ever a really high quality attacking player, just a really great fullback who could get forward & make the best of what he had, in an attacking sense, which made him very effective in the way we used to play. But he was not imo a great crosser from those positions & never anywhere near as quick as the players Pep has signed, or the ones used at Barca.

I think Maffeo is an excellent defender who could have been doing a job for us, filling in, during the past two seasons, but 'm not convinced he can get anywhere near doing what Kyle Walker or Mendy can do & delph is mch better on the ball & quicker.

i will be delighted if he can force his way in & if it was mancini, I would expect him to be perfect for the job, but with Pep's requirements ? I'm just not convinced he can be the future there.

Yangel Herrera, a Venezuelan we signed in January who’s on loan at NYCFC. He’s only 19 though so probably not ready for PL football just yet, I’d expect to see him on loan at Girona next season.

Ah yes I remember him in the U20 world cup looks decent but still very young.
