Christ is someone on here really trying to say that Arsenal's academy is better than ours if so give your head a wobble.

City before the takeover had the most academy players making it in to the first team whilst Jim Cassell was in charge. The difference being we were a mid table club so were happy that Willo Floos, Sam Williamson etc made it as it gave us hope at a tie we had little else. Now we have one of the best sides in the world and therefore to play in this side you have to be one of the best players in the world. Its rare for a world class talent to show itself at such a young age all you tend to have is potential

What the academy is doing is producing players who have potential but maybe its not to be a world class talent but enough talent to make it as a professional player somewhere else. Whay City are doing is keeping their options open so that if a player develops that potential they either can buy him back so avoiding the Pogba mistake or if the player is worth significantly more but is not a player City need they get a sell on profit

Players are happy to join because the facilities at the club will allow the player to develop and maximise his potential and they are aware that being at City will give them opportunities they wouldnt get if they were at other academies. Cityy have shown they wont stand in the way of players who wish to leave so why wouldnt any young player want to be here

Good post, its amazing that some people don't understand that. They come here to become the best they can, but most of them will understand that it might not be for us.

Quite right mate. What the youngsters are getting is the opportunity to be trained in the best facility in the country, surrounded by some of the best players in the world, who are in turn led by a world class manager/coach.
If that develops them into the best they can be, even if it isn't at City, then my guess is that most of them will see that they are getting a very good deal.
To end up as a professional footballer in either England or elsewhere is surely a dream come true for most of those kids.

cleavers, If in the future the younger players don't see any chance of progressing to the 1st team, they will not be signing for this club. Thus the academy becomes useless, and will end up costing us money instead of making us money as you see it now. We need to be producing our own players from the academy and not paying out huge sums of money for players like Mahrez, who we will be losing every other year for 6 to 8 weeks because of the African Cup of Nations which is always played in the Jan./Feb.

I am not saying that the whole team has to come from the academy, but I would like to see at least 2/3 players being given a chance to prove themselves in the first team. Take Nmecha, who according to some papers is going to Swansea, should either Sergio or Jesus get a serious injury we are in deep trouble, we will not have any other striker to take the weight of the striker who is left.

I have no words.

It's a platform. Young players don't sign for Manchester City to play for Manchester City.

It shapes the rest of their careers.

Elsewhere.

It's really not hard.

And this is the key. There’s lots on here and many in the sporting media who keep saying that there needs to be a clear path to the first team or kids and their parents will not be opting to go to city. The truth is that the exact opposite is true. They get a first class education, and large numbers of them are going on to be professional footballers, which is what they all want. This academy is a fantastic thing, whether it produces players for city or not.

Great post. I'd also throw in the profound revolution talking place in English football which is being studiously ignored by the media.

There's a very good reason the young England sides are so successful and that's the effect of the City (and Chelsea) academies. Our style of football is spreading and gradually undoing the damage done by the likes of Don Howe, Howard Wilkinson and others and a bit of gratitude wouldn't go amiss.

I think the media pick up on that little scenario because it’s what certain local teams would have parents believe. Don’t sign for big bad Man City, they’ll never get a game, unlike our superstars such as Macheda...

However times have moved on and we with them

Has anyone seen him play this season?

WhoScored's ratings show him doing quite well in two matches (losses), including a 7.6 rating against Bayern whilst no other player on Stuttgart rated above a 6.7.

I believe some question the value of their ratings at times (go see how some of our players were rating in recent matches versus what you hear from of fans: i.e. feelings about Mendy and Gundo against Wolves, yet both were rated over 7 by WhoScored), although their ratings come from an algorithm of "200 raw stats" not based on "your eyes", which one could argue is more objective.

Anyway, I believe whoever was on the last BlueMoon pod made it almost sound certain that he will return in a few seasons.

I am on board with the "buy back clause approach" to handling youth not quite ready to slot into the squad, but technically we have yet to see it come to fruition, and one can foresee obstacles (i.e. the player does not want to return, another club offers the player a better contract/situation).
