Perhaps they were worried that Ted might drive him to school whilst pissed and accidentally drive off a bridge and drown him, then flee the scene, like he did with his unfortunate date at Chappaquiddick.
And Patrick was doing more drugs than Pete Doherty at the time, so knocking him back was probably a wise move.
The Kennedy clan are quite possibly one of the most immoral and corrupt families in American history, which is some achievement, and I have never understood the dewy-eyed and nostalgic view of 'Camelot' that so many blinkered Irish-Americans seem to hold.

A drunk driver murderer who went on to a political career?
Half the happily-married devoutly Catholic family shagging Marilyn Monroe?

As for the Camelot thing, it is my understanding that whole thing was started by Jackie after JFK's death. She was certainly aware of the bad side of their relationship but wanted to whitewash the whole presidency.
