Paper Lads......and Lasses

A customer grassed me in when he saw me nicking a dirty mag off the top shelf. I denied it but the ironic thing is I hid under a holly bush near our house and when I returned for it later some thieving twat had had it. I denied nicking it but the owner knew better.
Sundays round was the worst, all sport and colour suppliments.
I predate the Sunday papers becoming so big.
In my day it was Thursday that was the killer with all the womens mags and Exchange and Mart coming out.
Worked morning and afternoon rounds at Varleys on Lloyd Street.
He used to sell you single cigs on tic.
By the time pay day arrived you had hardly any money due.
We also had to collect payment once a week from the houses we delivered to.

Certainly did. Those woods and Baguley brook were a kids heaven for us. Malcolm Allison lived in the posh houses backing on to those woods. Also guy who owned Raymonds Revue Bar and Peter Dobing for a while.
If only Kiplings knew the secrets them woods used to hold...lol...I'm from Benchill rd originally...Remember when we used to go and watch the city team training at Wythy Park.

Had a few paper rounds.
Never did mornings, but did the MEN round after school and saturdays.
Also did the (free) Weekend Chronicle before moving on to the Advertiser (which wasn't bad as they paid more dependent on amount of pages)

Remember using my Xmas tips (around 1984) to go buy a £40 Sergio Tacchini tracky top.

Packed them all in, when i got a milk round (collecting money Thurs/Friday nights & delivering Saturday mornings)

Keep it up...you'll be able to afford the trainers soon...:)

Did mornings and nights from age 12-18 with a few Sundays now and then (hated them) then left for the real world, don’t see them anymore, when I’m walking our dog in the morning there’s a couple who deliver by car! Honestly the cost of petrol it can’t make them any money at all.

I had a paper round at Dillons on Moorcroft Road, Northern Moor. Mrs Shippy used to prepare the rounds until she died.

One of my deliveries was to George Mann, who lived on Wythenshawe Road. He was a Labour councillor. Years later he was Chairman of North West Water, where I worked. I was the only one on our office that contributed to his retirement collection. Subsequently, I was the only one invited to his very posh leaving do.

Also used to watch City train in Wythenshawe Park.
