Paris 2024 Olympics Thread - 11th August (pg 430)

35% of the population apparently mate, it's going down year by year. I used to be glued to my TV but can't put the effort in.
I'm surprised, but I suppose it might reflect the change in the UK's love of international sport. International football is certainly not supported like it was.
Viewing habits have changed generally too.

Was explaining to my son yesterday (He's in his 30's) that when we watched the World Cup we had the chance to see all the exotic players we never had a chance to see, now we see them all the time it's not as special.

The Olympics is sprawling now as well, add to that they've effectively put live Olympics on PPV with you having to get a package it was so much easier to watch a few Olympics back.

It would be better if it was all live, I’ve subscribed to Discovery and it’s fucking brilliant, can skip between whatever I want.
BBC coverage is shite compared to it. If bbc did similar to Discovery then I’m sure more would be interested.

To be fair the TV deal massively affects it. Need all the sports available on the BBC again but they didn't really have a choice due to the expense.

Always find it amazing that we have some of the best professional boxers in the world and yet the Olympic judges think our amateurs are shite.

A lot of people used to "Have it on" in the background, it's a bit more difficult to do that now they want money for it I suppose.

I've always loved watching the more esoteric sports you don't often get to see - that was what the Olympics was all about. It's a crime that they've put them behind a pay wall.

I agree it's not the event it once was. I heard a theory that the internet has essentially hyper-fragmented modern popular culture. We who were around before it have a lot of shared experience because up until the 00s there was only a narrow band of media available to consume. Frankly, there wasn't much else to do other than all tune into the thing everybody would be talking about. These days there's just so much choice, people bury themselves in the really specific things they're interested. Which is great for people with more niche interests but it does mean that we have lost that feeling of there being events that engross the whole nation.

It's all parcelled with the rise of commercial individualism, but will leave that for the Reagan/Thatcher thread!

I have absolutely zero boxing expertise, experience or knowledge but I can confidently say that the decision to give that Polish lass the win was criminal. She was getting absolutely peppered in that final round!
