Paris 2024 Olympics Thread - 11th August (pg 430)

Apart from the 16 year old who got bronze yesterday!
To be fair, Sky Brown grew up in Japan and the USA, and Andy MacDonald is basically an American who wanted to go to the Olympics, so looked to qualify through his dad's nationality. So two out of our three skateboarders took up the sport because they lived in America, which suggests that Britain probably isn't a hotbed of skateboarding talent. Which is fine. We don't have to be into every sport.

I think a lot go to USA for weather as well, plus their pavements are usually skateboarder friendly unlike ours!

When will KJT get injured?

The American just like last night wanted it more. They’re having a phenomenal Olympics in the track and field and they're simply prepared to push themselves to the limits to win a gold. Like most of the european countries we seem to be there just to make up the numbers.

I don't think they want it more, they've just pulled out phenomenal performances. MHS ran the 5th fastest time ever and a huge PB. You can't do more than that. Kerr maybe could have timed hi move better, but Ingebrigtsen should have been defending the inside and Kerr couldn't do anything about that in the end.

They're pulling out some incredible performances. It's always down to fine margins and whether that be the lean for the finish or timing of their sprint, they're nailing it.

I thought Asha Smith could have medalled in the 200m if she'd had gone for the line better, she seemed to just ease up whilst the American ducked for it and got the bronze.

I don't think Sky Brown has ever lived in the UK. Born in Japan to a Japanese Mum and British Dad then grew up there and in the US I believe.

Plus they make the manoeuvres sound waaaay much cooler maaaaaan. A parallel inverted 360 sounds so much better than ' arse over tit '

Interestingly (or not as the case may be) we are 20th in terms of gold medals per head. Per million of population it is -

Dominica 13.69
St Lucia 5.55
Brunei 2.2
Ireland 0.79
Australia 0.64
New Zealand 0.57
Netherlands 0.51
Croatia 0.50
Slovenia 0.47
Chinese Taipei 0.36
Hungary 0.3
Sweden 0.28
Serbia 0.28
Georgia 0.27
Hong Kong 0.27
South Korea 0.21
France 0.2
Azerbaijan 0.19
Norway 0.19
GB 0.18

USA are 0.07
Japan 0.09
China 0.02

If you look at total medals and say a gold is worth 3, silver 2 and bronze 1, the order is

Dominica
St lucia
Grenada
Brunei
New Zealand
Australia
Ireland
Chinese Taipei
Croatia
Jamaica
Netherlands
Georgia
Fiji
Kosovo
Hungary
Cape Verde
Sweden
Cyprus
Slovenia
France
Israel
GB (22nd)

USA are 59th and China 64th

India are last in both tables

However countries with populations over 30 million with no medals at all (excluding Russia who are excluded from the Olympics) are:-

Pakistan 240 million
Nigeria 223 million
Bangladesh 173 million
Congo 102 million
Vietnam 99 million
Thailand 72 million
Tanzania 67m
Myanmar 55 m
Sudan 48m
Iraq 46m
Afghanistan 42m
Morocco 38m
Saudi Arabia 37 m
Angola 37m
Yemen 34m
Ghana 34m
Mozambique 35m
Nepal 31m
Madagascar 30m

So on both measures Dominica and St Lucia are winning the Olympics

I should add that on the way back from West Ham last season we were talking about fantasy football and my youngest went “oh my dad’s a spreadsheet wanker” (I admit I did have a spreadsheet for fantasy football) - so I was basically on a par with the briefcase wanker from the Inbetweeners! - which unfortunately has stuck

Of the countries who have won medals, India are still last (biggest population in the world, currently no golds or silvers).

Of the countries with no medals but populations over 30 million, there are now 17 - Morocco have now won a medal and Thailand should not have been on this list - spelling error on spreadsheet before (oops).

I really need to get a proper hobby
