Paris 2024 Olympics Thread - 11th August (pg 430)

If you're referring to Thompson I think the working assumption is more that things will go tits up at some point rather than anything being nailed on. Think she's done pretty well overall.
The way some sections of the media were bigging her up in the run up up to the games, you'd have thought she only had to turn up. Seemingly not.

She is currently 121 points behind, Thiam has one throw left.
a tiny glimmer for KJT in that Thiam didn't better her 54 something. A big ask in the 800m, a run of a life time required, or a stinker from Thiam.

After the long-jump:

Johnson-Thompson: 5030
Thiam : 4985

Johnson-Thompson has got 773 pts in the javelin.
Thiam's PB is 59m, but if she gets about 55m, that is 958 pts.

Potentially, Thiam leads by 140 pts after the javelin.

in the 800m, we can expect Thiam to get about 930-950? (her best is ~2:12, or 961)

therefore, Johnson-Thompson would need ~1080 pts in the 800 (2:02!!), her best ever is 1064 (2:05). She should beat Thiam in the 800m, but she needs to beat her PB and hope for a slightly slower Thiam to stand any chance.

My prediction is she needs to win the 800 by between 9 and 10 seconds

I think it's about 8 seconds she needs to win by to take gold. Very unlikely. She didn't run a great 200m and she missed an opportunity in the long jump to get enough points to reduce that to 5 seconds which would have been achievable. I think it's silver for KJT now sadly. Thiam a triple Olympic champion, unbelievable achievement.

to be fair to her, and I am somewhat biased against scousers, that is our media not her - she was always a big second favourite (I think the long jump was the one event where she should have done better)

KJT is 8 seconds behind Thiam.

KJT has a PB of 2:05 from the world championships in Budapest last year.

Thiam has a PB of 2:11 set in Rome in June.

Don't think it's happening, she has beat her in the past by more than 8 seconds though. She would need to PB and hope Thiam isn't in PB shape which she probably is having ran that in June.

The way some sections of the media were bigging her up in the run up up to the games, you'd have thought she only had to turn up. Seemingly not.

Thiam is a double Olympic champion and needed to be off form for KJT to have any chance. I think the talk around her is probably amplified by the fact you have two former heptathlon gold medallists sat in the studio! KJT needed to be better in the 200m and long jump really. Javelin isn't her best usually, but she'd have had the points to then steal the gold in the 800m.

Silly really given that though she's the reigning world champ she's not managed to medal at the prev 3 Olympics. Also in multi-event sports, shit happens as we saw with the mens.

I think it's silver and hopefully at some point she'll be chuffed to get her hands on an Olympic medal at last.

KJT is 8 seconds behind Thiam.

KJT has a PB of 2:05 from the world championships in Budapest last year.

Based on the 200m yesterday, Thiam looks like she'll run her PB pretty close and KJT doesn't look likely to smash hers. I think it's done. Depends whether Thiam just looks to run her own race or stick close to KJT, if the latter KJT could go out super quick and just hope she holds on and Thiam folds.
