Paul Gascoigne - terrible waste

It was quite outrageous .
The fact that it is known as the "Gary Charles" tackle says it all.

Disgraceful tackle. And was at the time too, even by the standards then.

As an aside, Gary Charles went on to have demons not too dissimilar to Gascoigne.

Gascoigne is an arsehole and someone to have sympathy for - they aren't mutually exclusive.

He is also not fit to compare careers and achievements with some of the other greats of the English game, whilst simultaneously being significantly more technically talented than most of them as a footballer. That's not a contradiction either. His pure footballing ability was off the scale. But, as others have pointed out, this isn't the only characteristic that goes into making a truly all time great footballer.

And, yes, in my opinion he was never anywhere near as good once he had that injury. In fact, I would say he was pretty shite, at the highest level, once he left Lazio. He was picked on reputation for too long before Hoddle binned him from England.

Italia 90 was a very low scoring defensive so it was difficult for any player to stand out. But besides that he was certainly England's best player performance wise in the 90,s.

He showed a lot more than flashes of brilliance for England.

You can't compare gazza with foden because foden is playing with a team who own the ball against 90% of teams they play against.

Gazza played for a mediocre spurs side. And please ballotelli. Gazza was a far intelligent and disciplined player than ballotelli. Ridiculous comparison.

On the one hand you say you can't compare but on the other hand say Gascoigne was better. You can't have it both ways.

I've tried to be polite but I'll be honest now. I came up in the generation as he was on the wane but videos exist. English football has become way faster, more competitive and skilful since Gascoigne played in it; he wouldn't make it today, not a chance. The only reason he's considered a great is because the press present him as an everyman, "one of us" character because he liked a beer.

He never achieved in his whole career what Foden has achieved aged 21 because he wasn't as good. *That* is the ridiculous comparison.
