paul lake

At that time we had Redmond, Hinchcliffe, Brightwell, Lake and White and every week a top manager was watching them from the stands.
It was rumored that Dalglish drooled every time he saw Lake.

How good was he? Very good
Would he have gone on to play for England? Probably. Hinchcliffe and White did

Lake was good in the air, had pace and two great feet. His problem was that because he was so good, he was extremely versatile and he never actually settled into one playing position
I personally thought he was too good to be a defender and his best position at that time was wide midfield, but over time he would become a central midfielder

I remember when he originally did his knee in against Bradford. I still think he should just have stuck the ball in the net instead of trying to dribble it round their entire defense.

Good point about the versatility and that we never perhaps knew where he was at his best.

Where do you think he'd play in the current City setup?

I can easily imagine him in Vinny's role and perhaps a hybrid of Barry and Yaya. He'd also do a job out on the left of midfield at the moment as well.

I loved that City team with so much homegrown talent in it.

When dreaming of playing for City, And we all did it, Then you dream of being quite frankly the best player who could do everything in the game effortlessly and naturally and then some more, You then add to that one of nicest down to earth feet on the ground footballers a fan could ever wish to meet and then you've dreamt the perfect footballer and person !!

That gives you Paul Lake - Its unlikely Paul's career would of flurished the way it was obvious it was going to with us but it's also very unlikely he'd ever had wanted to leave City.

Abilty, Pace, Heading, Vision, Stanima - You name it and Lake had it and that was before he was given the chance to delvolp it and truly show it, He would be spoken about in the same breath as Bell, Young & Summerbee had injury not taken that from him.

You might want to have a look at his autobiography. It was very good reading but a tear came to my eye on occassions.

Yes he was a great player and could, no would have been one of Englands finest. he was such a versatile player, back four midfield hell everywhere. I think there is a quote that one year apart from goalkeeper he played in every position. A true great and I hope his demons are behind him (read his book to understand the last)

I got my copy signed at the shop on Market Street. The line for signatures was long so started reading it, but had to shut it after 2 pages as the eyes were beginning to water up a lot.
I've read most City autobiographies (Neil Young, Doyle, Trautman, Ken Barnes etc etc) but Paul Lake's book is the first by a player I actually saw and followed from watching every youth cup game (home + away leg of the final) the season City won it in 1986 and then the reserves and into the 1st team.
In Paul's case it really was ''do believe the hype''

He was too good to be a centre half
In our current side a box to box man, linking the play from defense to attack

Looked a top player but would nt have been with us much longer.if he had nt got injured he would have joined Liverpool
