Disregarding questions of value, its about staking a claim and making a statement. The rags are recovering from their near death experience and are now throwing their weight about again. Football is unfortunately about perceptions on the world stage and they are recovering again. Frankly it pisses me off that in the past 2 years we regressed instead of claiming the top spot.

True his contract had expired. but as I understand it because of his age at the time he left, plus the time he had spent with the Rags, it's classed as youth development and are entitled to a percentage of his next transfer fee.
Just like we did with with Sturridge? No. Never happened.

To quote Nigel Pearson are we all still ostriches in this thread or is there any perspective that them red twats are getting a great talent?

He's a great player who will obviously improve them. However they'd improve far more, in my opinion, if they bought 3 £30m players than Pogba for the same price (in reality he'll cost far more than £89m when you factor in agents fees etc). Pogba has the same issues to his game as Yaya does, when he's on form he's awesome, however too often he's mediocre. If you're spending that kind of money you should be getting a regular game changer, someone who can be relied upon game after game after game. Pogba isn't reliable enough to justify the fee. United are still looking at Blind for centre half, and Valencia as a full back. Top quality options in those positions, with tens of millions left over to strengthen elsewhere too, is a more sensible way to go than Pogba and a big hole in their bank account.

There's nothing stopping them going out spending £30m on 3 good players next summer. Pogba was available this window and they've done what it took to get him. Agree with you that he's no game changer at the moment though. Isn't averse to dropping his team mates in it either if the opportunity to showboat arises.

Buying 3 decent 30m players will never take you to the next level.
To compete at the very top, you need the very best players.

3 Girouds does not make an Aguero.
3 Joe Harts does not make a Neuer.

You are right but they haven't just signed pogba, they've made a couple of decent, well priced additions too. We also know that in this market you could buy 3 30mill pound players, doesn't mean they are any good Bony etc. Not saying there's no value out there but they've strengthened then put their bollocks on the table to sign him. Jose bullies shit teams and shuts up shop against the big boys and pogba is perfect for that against the lesser teams. It's a massive signing for the money and the fact they can attract a player or that calibre without champions league football. We've wasted the last 3 years where we should of been light years ahead of them for this to not really matter, it's shocking we are probably on a par with them as they are getting their act together. Hope he's a massive flop though, that would be sweet
