Paul Simpson Tales of Blue

We used to stand in windy corner next to a kid from Stretford, who loved Simpson that much his own nickname actually became Simmo on a match day.

When he was sold to Oxford he was never seen again. I always imagined he either moved to Oxford and became a fan of them, or he died of a broken heart.

I thought he would be a mega star, scored some important goals for us, two in the Charlton 5-1 promotion game and the winner at Portsmouth away. Great fast player with an eye for goal.
The Portsmouth, Charlton and Huddersfield games do come to mind when you think of Paul Simpson don't they.
Fantastic goal that one away at Fratton Park, big win, as they were up there with us weren't they. Remember the celebrations after that goal( and a great save Alex Williams made in the first half of that game when his arm seemed to extend by about another 5 foot..who was that cartoon character, was it a inspector Gadget?)
Back to Simpson ('Simmo' was the chant wasn't it?) Indeed had he played for a top side in his career he really could have been something.
One of those players in his prime like Bernarbia, SWP, Creaney (okay, maybe not him!!!) it would be interesting to see in another era, in a Pep City team.

Simo actually only played 10 times during the 84/85 season. He came off the bench at Sheffield United during November for his first appearance then wasn't seen again until March 30th when he started, and scored in a 2-2 home draw with Cardiff City, then started the last eight games scoring 5 times.
