i used to knock about with deno, the singer from d.i.r.t. who regularly supported them live, so i was lucky enough to see crass many times.
she took me to their commune in epping forest, what an eye-opener!

their lyrics & behaviour changed the way many people viewed life.
The commune really was something else..
Was always aware of Crass from the early 80s ,as an avid record collector in those days,I was always coming across stuff like "Sheep Farming in the Falklands" EP , but having no clue who the band were or what they sounded like...just intrigued by their single releases/ packaging and titles..

It wasn't until about 15 years ago a mate introduced me to their brilliance, principally "So what" and "Do they owe us a living" etc etc my mate did try and tell me Crass were the 1st band to fuse political speech recorded backing tracks over music, but I wasn't having that as Cabaret Voltaire were doing that late 70s, so I argued the toss with him.

're Peel sessions generally I only heard a few 'live ' back in the day.

Over a decade ago a mate of mine ,dying from Cancer promised me his whole personal collection of taped sessions from radio 1....he died..and his exmissus threw them away when I asked about them some wks after his passing...She said they looked like trash and were taking up a load of space !!

I have Siouxsie,Xmal Deutschland and Joy Division sessions on 12" vinyl...could have been so much more !
Early Xmal ( not the one ive got) imo was the finest session ever someone was kind enough to post on here few months back.

Is there any British band that mattered that didn't do a Peel session?

Apart from the Clash and the Pistols?
And the Roses, who Peel didn't like.
Although I'm sure he played Elephant Stone
Iron Maiden? Judas Priest? Rainbow? Led Zeppelin? Marillion? Deep Purple? The Prodigy?
I genuinely don’t know if any of the above did or not.
I’d also ask re Simple Minds, ABC, Talk Talk, Yes, The The, The Police?

I’ve had a look through the full thread here and imho there’s some absolute shite. The thing I remember most about his Mon - Thurs show was you’d have to listen for two hours to hear 1 (max 2) great tracks - which I was rarely prepared to do.
The Friday slot was a much better show.

That was John Walters, producer of the Peel Show and close mate, who had seen the Fall supporting Siouxsie and the Banshees in London. So he recommended the group for a session.
i feel awful for getting his name mixed up.
without him, and of course john peel, it's unimaginable how different our lives would've been.

the fold-out sleeve artwork was amazing, wasn't it.
i expect it'd be difficult nowadays to find copies without holes in the corners from where people had them drawing pinned to their bedroom walls.
their record label also went on to showcase some top stuff too.
best of all was how affordable they were...
"pay no more than 75p" etc written boldly on the front.

the gigs were the same, 50p in or summat & usually a big pan of veggie stew for people to help themselves to for nowt if they were hungry.
the energy between the band & the crowd was like nothing i've ever seen since.

what a sad story, mate.
hopefully somebody found them & still has them and will in turn pass them on.
