The commune really was something else..i used to knock about with deno, the singer from d.i.r.t. who regularly supported them live, so i was lucky enough to see crass many times.
she took me to their commune in epping forest, what an eye-opener!
their lyrics & behaviour changed the way many people viewed life.
Was always aware of Crass from the early 80s ,as an avid record collector in those days,I was always coming across stuff like "Sheep Farming in the Falklands" EP , but having no clue who the band were or what they sounded like...just intrigued by their single releases/ packaging and titles..
It wasn't until about 15 years ago a mate introduced me to their brilliance, principally "So what" and "Do they owe us a living" etc etc my mate did try and tell me Crass were the 1st band to fuse political speech recorded backing tracks over music, but I wasn't having that as Cabaret Voltaire were doing that late 70s, so I argued the toss with him.
're Peel sessions generally I only heard a few 'live ' back in the day.
Over a decade ago a mate of mine ,dying from Cancer promised me his whole personal collection of taped sessions from radio 1....he died..and his exmissus threw them away when I asked about them some wks after his passing...She said they looked like trash and were taking up a load of space !!
I have Siouxsie,Xmal Deutschland and Joy Division sessions on 12" vinyl...could have been so much more !
Early Xmal ( not the one ive got) imo was the finest session ever someone was kind enough to post on here few months back.
