Pele - was he that good? And why ?

Was voted ‘save of the century’ iirc ?
To be fair, that kind of accolade never means much. These things just can't be measured. What was astonishing about that save is that Banks briefly appears to start going the wrong way. Pelé hit the ball perfectly. Against anyone else except perhaps prime Yashin (so I've heard) that's a goal.

Since I was a young lad Pele was the player everybody wanted to see and The World Cup in 1966 was when that was possible, unfortunately he got kicked to fuck and we didn’t see the best of him.

Pity he was targeted by the hatchet men in 1966, particularly the Portuguese and Bulgarian defenders.

Absolutely. As a youngster, I got tickets for my birthday to see him in the group matches at Goodson Park. He was systematically hacked to fcuk from the word go until unable to make any meaningful contribution. What a crying shame.

A memorable match starring Eusebio against North Korea provided some compensation but how disappointed I was to see the great man abused like that.

In tonight’s news, Pele is on his death bed. I don’t normally go along with outpourings of grief over celebrity deaths but will be saddened when the inevitable happens. A true superstar and a gent too.

You're wrong. He was the player everyone wanted to BE.

I'll cry my fucking eyes out when he goes mate, for no other reason than I'll be fucking heartbroken.

Comparing players from different eras is futile. Pele was undoubtedly the greatest of his generation. As was Cruyff, Maradonna, Zidane and now Messi. Arguing over the greatest of all time can’t be done. Rocky Marciano was undefeated but had he met Cassius Clay who knows what would have happened. Jack Nicklaus vs Tiger Woods? Let’s just appreciate great sportsmen for what they were. Pele I wish you all the best

The GOAT debate in any sports is utterly boring.

My old man knew his football, he really did.

He always said that had all the supposedly greatest players had played at the same point in history then Pele would still have been the greatest ever, closely followed by Cruyff.
