I think it's time we replaced Stevie Wonder as the penalty coach.

Sterling had the right idea as putting it top bins is usually unstoppable but he got the execution a bit wrong.

Top bins is much too risky.
Yesterday Raz was allowed to, in an important match a pen doesn't have to be beautiful,
you just have to find the net.
Sharp to bottom corner all day long and a little fake movement is enough.

Like Aleix did: send the keeper to one corner and the ball to the other. That's all.

We’ve missed too many important pens recently not to make this a priority. I haven’t felt confident after being awarded a pen since Yaya stopped taking them.
I understand that even the best can miss, but fuck me, we seem to miss far more than our fair share.
Just hit a corner at pace and no goalkeeper is getting close.

Gundogan has scored all his before yesterday but his first one, away at Tottenham amazed me. It was so telegraphed which way he was going that if anyone other than Lloris had been in net, they’d have read it like a book.

He did exactly the same run up yesterday. I was convinced that he was going to bury it in the far right corner at pace. Even if it’s telegraphed, if hit right no keeper is getting near it. For some reason he hit it in the opposite direction, nowhere near a corner and at the perfect height to be saved.
Our pens yesterday were atrocious.

The best place to aim is about 2/3 to 3/4 of the height of the net and to either corner. No keeper dives up, they dive down. No need to go all out for top bins like Sterling always tries, but just lift it above midheight. Also, to improve accuracy just take a bit of pace off. If anything it makes it more unsavable since the keeper will already be diving and can’t adjust. They’ll dive under it almost.

Never understood why we are so poor at pens for a team/squad of such talented footballers, there about 2 or 3 I have any confidence with taking a pen. I mean, did anyone really think David Silva would score yesterday? Yet the guy can put the ball on a sixpence from 50 yards.

I don’t think we are as bad at penalties as some on here make out. Sure, we’ve missed a few key penalties recently, Spurs away in the CL and dippers away being the notable ones, but when was the last time we lost a shootout in a proper competition?

FWIW despite his miss yesterday, I’d want Gundo taking them personally if he’s on the field.

Balotelli was brilliant, agreed. But he relied on "fooling" the keeper; wait until the keeper moves and then hit it in the opposite direction. Worked 99% of the time. Elano on the other hand, simply blasted it into the side netting, 100% of the time. Absolutely unsavable, no matter what the keeper does.

A study a couple of years ago showed that the most likely way to score a penalty is to aim right at the keeper / down the middle. Goalies almost always dive one way or the other.

Of course in practice, for any given penalty taker, it only works until goalies realise that this is what you're doing.

We don’t seem to currently have anyone like Balo or Yaya who seem to never miss.
Sorry to say it but I think we should stay with Aguero. To take the job off him may be counterproductive for very little gain.
