Penalty Taker

Who should take penalties if Haaland is not on the pitch?

Another way of thinking if Ederson should take them is: would we want him to take a penalty if we are 0-1 up at the Bernabeu and have just been awarded a penalty in the 90th minute. We wouldn't let him take it for the risk they could counter. We could go from a position where we can win the game 2-0 to one where we draw 1-1 within 20 seconds.

Maybe in a FA Cup tie, if we were 1-0 up against a team of weasels like WBA and we're in the 92nd minute. They've not had much of a chance all game and are going to lose. Would they be tempted to give away a penalty as a "roll of the dice" that it's saved/missed and they then can counter and potentially score?

The only reason Ederson would take a penalty is when the league is won. He should be the last person taking them.

Let Rodri take them, given his great form lately then the only time i can boo him again is if he misses a pen

Ederson might be good at taking penalties, but he is the goalkeeper. If he is out of his net, we have a problem.

One day, the ball will either hit a post or be saved and then cleared. The opposition will then be able to have a good counter on our goal with a high chance of scoring - not quite as high as a penalty, but not far off. There's also a real chance one of our defenders will have to haul someone down and be booked/sent off.

I don't see why a player who can feel confident taking a free kick 30yards out with a wall and a goalkeeper to beat can't do it 12 yards out with just a goalkeeper to beat. I honestly think half the time we're being too clever with them.

The team either need to practice taking them for an hour a day, every day after training or they need to throw the dice and smash it as hard as they physically can at the net. There are no other options. It should always be a player with good mental strength who tends to play well too - Dias, Walker, Fernandinho, Rodri, Aguero for me. Someone who is not going to bottle it.

I'm starting to feel this Ederson-taking-penalties is something that will start to weigh on players if they miss them as well.

Ederson can take them once the league is won, before that he should concentrate on keeping the ball out of his net.
You include Aguero but he is a god awful penalty taker, so in fact, he really is a bottler as some of his pens are so tentative and under-hit they are unreal, hell, even some of the ones he has scored have been for want of a better word lucky to go in.

Ginger Kev will be back soon, he's probably been our best penalty taker in recent times.

It would be great to get someone who is Yaya/Mario quality at pens though. At the moment it seems almost 50/50 if we will score but with those 2 you knew if we got a pen it was a goal.

Kev, Aguero, Gundog for me. But mainly, make sure it's clear before the game, don't fuck about giving it to Rodri or talking about Eddie, and stick to one or two so they know Pep has confidence in them.
So you have picked the three takers who have missed the most pens and are sticking with them?

We are meant to be finding a new taker not recycling the ones that you can't rely on in the slightest, it was obvious KDB didn't want the job, soon as he missed the 2nd time he was not taking another, Gundy is 50% 3 in 6 he should be nowhere near taking a pen again and Aguero has missed plenty and as already discussed despite him scoring 40+ pens for us he has missed a lot the last few seasons and even the ones that have gone in have hardly been confident affairs.

Somebody in that squad needs to be our new Yaya/Mario or loathe to say Fernandive at the rags.

I think we may as well stick to De Bruyne or Gundogan. They're all going to miss some it seems, we might as well keep it simple and go with the ones we think are the least likely to miss.

Chopping and changing them is only going to unsettle them. Even if we land on someone who's a brilliant penalty taker, what happens if he misses one?

They just need to practice a bit more.
