People trying to bring the government down, or just chaos?

What exactly have they promised ? They have stopped Rewanda plan which was waste of time and money have delivered record deportations a massive crack down on illegal working a reduction in hotels, and a deal with France and reduced back log in claims and now an advertising campaign showing deportations to put people off coming. In what 12 months. Seems good going to me
For example, the deal with France is minimal, they expect to send back no more than 25 per day. As for Rwanda, yes a waste of time, so why are they trying to do a similar deal elsewhere? Albania turned them down.
I could go on but the one thing which would help the situation would be to allow them to work, maybe with a route to legal residence. No sign of that.
PS Did they promise to stop the boats?

Ha ha, whats pathetic is the state of GBNew, twitter, Laura Keunsberg, Talk TV who would report on a fart by a labour MP in a lift just to give a negative spin on the government.

As stated I have no love for Starmer, Reeves, Lammy and the government, but the constant negative press is plain to see.

Stop watching and reading it then but you can’t can you?

Instead you have to spend your time deflecting from the government of the day, issues that face us all and just blame anyone and anything but those currently responsible.

There is a simple answer that they won't do as like the last Govt they are shit scared of Farage and Reform but are just fanning their flames. Provide safe routes ( puts dinghies out of business overnight plus I am reliably informed you can't get on a plane or ferry without the necessary paperwork and its cheaper ) process them when they get here and if they fail the test back the go ....................... really not sure why the Govt thinks the current stupid stance is the correct one - furthermore a number of senior politicians are killing their careers in an absurd cosplay "tough guy" stance. The people they have lost to Reform are not coming back - forget them and do the right thing

We dont know the scale of the France deal if it works tho it wont be on lower levels made up by the negative right wing press.

The deals with other countries are not like Rwanda

Agree with working would also allow safe routes

And no they didn’t promise to stop the boats that’s was the last lot

Immigration is of no concern to me, but the gov must follow an effective policy since it is an issue for so many.
So, thanks for the heads up.

The fact the number of people coming over on dinghy's suggest the gangs have not been smashed.
You’re probably right but I don’t think it’s that simple for example they could be smashing the gangs and we don’t know it could be a publicity issue. Or it could be that the gangs are growing faster for some reason or it could be that the gangs are fewer in number but transporting more people.

I think the problem is actually the general public haven’t a clue.

For example 50 % of the public think that the majority of people coming here are illegal the actual % is 4 %

The way stop the boats would be to open up safe and legal routes but that won’t happen incase more people come even tho it would be a fairer system would probably cost less to administer and would look less worrying and stop people drowning

We had 14 years of rather rubbish government under the last lot. Yet people seemed to put up with it for a very long time.

Now within 12 months the new labour government on top of the usual complaining from the right wing media. Which has gone into over drive is facing a second summer of riots over immigration and now talk of green protesters collaborating with Palestine Action to overwhelm the police.

Neither group seems to have a clear motive. The first cannot stop immigration or people being housed in hotels. All that will happen is they will be moved to different hotels at great expense whilst the police are kept busy dealing with protesters also at expense. They will eventually be moved into housing rather than hotels so the problem will be dispersed but that’s always been the plan nothing to do with the riots

The green and Palestine Action stuff seems to be focused on overwhelming the police and little else

The current government have actually done lot of good things. Planning reform record NHS investment, stopped the first lot of strikes, record deportations, India, US, Europe deals, wage rises, interest rate cuts, record investment, reviews on everything, new regulators, I am sure I missed lots.

If you look at Twitter, there certainly talk of the government being against the people and talk of overwhelming the police and I would say a few who are actually calling for something more sinister. Some seemingly pro American / Israeli /Trump and probably some Russian or Chinese bots and some probably just far right

So what’s going on and what should be done ?

I'm not buying full on conspiracy theories - but I do think social media makes truth almost impossible to find these days (and agree that it's amplified all over the place by bots).

The other big change (and it's a result of social media), is that Farage had a breakthrough election last year, and so Labour are facing something very unusual. Most Governments tend to have rough starts, and try do unpopular things first, but their main opponents have just been thrown out of office, so they've got a little goodwill. Even then, it's far from unusual to be badly behind in the polls within 12-24 months.

However, this is the first Parliament where there's been a significant party of "change", without past Government baggage, there from day one - and that makes a huge difference. Take out Reform, and consider how Labour would be faring against Kemi Badenoch's Tories, and it's easy to see why there's much more pressure this time around.

How it plays out over the next four years is anyone's guess.

Some very short term memories on here. The whole world over the last few years has started to become much less stable state, not just in lands that most people couldn't tell you where they were on a map, but places at European borders and areas where many who live in the UK have connections.
Towards the end of Sunka's tenure this was reported by the BBC.

Or this in 2022

Going back further did we all forget this ?

Or even the England riots ...

As for social media, its become increasingly polarised since 2008 with less and less room for honest and open debate. You only have to look at our politics threads to see that and they are nothing compared to X.

At times like this you need good leaders (not authoritarians but strong), who are willing to make difficult decisions and push them through, not swayed by back benchers or in the conservatives case the 1922 committee. We are sadly lacking this.

I am not saying it’s a conspiracy as such I don’t think the establishment ( billionaires the press other politicians Farage Kemi) are in on it. However if you look on social media there are clearly people who want at the very least an election 4 years early if not chaos and the fall of the government. They might be conspiring. Most won’t do much the rioters go home in the rain. A lot of the very right are old stupid or both.

I agree with what you have said.

I would add that when the current government got elected they did in part because we have big problems that’s made there job harder ( no money) but it should have given them time as we should have understood that they couldn’t fix things straight away. I did but seems most of the public haven’t what’s also not helped is people have snapped because of the problems and lack of trust from the last lot.

All the negative press and calls for a dissolution of Parliament is just the rich trying to protect their precious £'s

We've struggled since the 2008 financial crisis and we pissed on the green shoots of recovery through Brexit. Now we have economic headwinds we we aren't prosperous enough to withstand, so people can see things being eroded: their libraries, their pubs, their police, their doctors.

Uneducated people are looking for someone or something to blame. They are looking for easy solutions which simply don't exist, and there are some who skilfully manipulate that situation to their own ends.

Do you genuinely believe the last administration had less negative press than the current? I'd say no.

What with Parties, lying to the Queen and a scandal just about every other week it's hard not to see that.

The problem with this Labour government is that they are absolutely ripping themselves apart mainly through ignorance, stupidity and naivety.... and basically lying in their manifesto and has been proven many times through Starmers continuing U turns just saying what they think the public wants to hear.

They do have a massive Parliamentary majority but I tell you what.... it is also a very very fragile majority which could and maybe already has been wiped out come the next election.

So no, I am not trying to bring the Government down.... it is doing that very well to its own self
I'd say 'Yes'.
At least 4 daily papers printing negative headlines day after day.
