People who have quit drinking

People who have give up drinking are a hell of a lot less annoying than ex-smokers

I'm curious, have you noticed any significant benefits? If so, what like?

I'm contemplating packing it in, or at least toning it down substantially. I'm fed up of it. I did a period of a month or two with very little alcohol at the start of the year and I felt much happier.

Pretty much gave up when I was 18, which is a lot of years ago, after an impromptu heavy drinking session where I had no intention of getting drunk. That was my first and last hangover, which I reckon is a benefit. Also, while others were spending their cash on cigarettes and alcohol, I was building my record collection and going to gigs and football matches. Always had better things, IMO, to spend money on; can't avoid it completely: the wife imbibes a very moderate number of units.

Gay.
Good on you for coming out.

I gave up drinking when I was about 25 after a particularly bad black out/ misbehaviour - these were getting more and more frequent and longer, and I was heading for a spectacular fall if I carried on :(

Seven years of sobriety followed, which I wouldn't change for the world, felt like a new man, tons of energy, saved loads of money which meant I could conversely go out more, chauffering the lads who would keep me in pop and cigars all night :)

Started having an odd beer here and there after deciding I could behave, and that's how it's been ever since, just don't feel the need to get shitfaced any more, except maybe at festivals when I'm properly chilled :)

Whatever suits you I say that's fine, just don't be afraid to say no when everyone else is at it, it's your life.

shifted from a "regular" drinker to a big event/occasional type.

Has anyone else thats stopped noticed an increase in the amount of snacking or junk food eaten?I sort of thought I'd lose weight when I quit drinking, but I'm actually up weight. I never have really wanted, or ate snack food before, but now I'm salivating over cakes and shit.

That's because your body is craving the sugar it is missing from not having alcohol

I eat very little when drinking. When I lay off for a few days, my appetite increase is massive. Vodka and coke is my favourite, so it has little of anything in it (except alcohol) If I gave up the booze I'd be fat.

Haha, you're worse than me. :) Having 5 pints of lager though feels like you've eaten a big dinner to me. That's why I don't drink it often, And forget Guiness, a couple of pints of that and I'm bloated like i've eaten a 3 course meal.
