Pep’s Spurs (H) Post-Match Interview

Oh yes he has done that alright, but I'll be the same supporting bloke on Sunday, shouting and screaming my bollocks off to help the team
Well then, Pep wasn’t talking about you! And hopefully his words get everyone else to be more like you.

They were dreadful in the first half man. Those fans had every right to boo.

Bullshit.

The entitlement of feeling you've a right to boo the team in those circumstances is exactly what Pep was, rightly, calling out from our fans.

We're not entitled to win anything. We need to support the team, to help them.

[Gotta say, though, I didn't actually notice any booing myself. I did have my head in my hands though, so may have just missed it]

Just watched Micah response to pep after Match interview! Said sound like he has had enough! Micah you been with Carragher to long you 100% wrong and so so out of touch with Manchester City! Your playing the crowd! Totally disappointed with him

You say it wasn't uo to our standards but I think in recent years our support is not up to the standards of the football we have been blessed with
Demographics of our support is part of the reason I'm afraid to a certain degree, they need to pay real close attention to the fanbase they want to attract when the north stand is redeveloped, trouble is, if they want silly money for ST's then its going to be more happy clappers I'm afraid, they have to go down the SS3 route on prices imo.

The irony of it all is.,

The same people who are praising Pep for the interview in which he claims it’s happy flowers for everyone and everyone is too comfortable and claiming it has ruffled feathers and put the fire back in the belly are the same ones criticising fans for letting the players and Pep know the only way they can that the performance is not good enough by booing.

The fans who booed last night are the ones who weren’t happy that standards weren’t being met, the same reason Pep bashed them at half time.

0-2 down at half time looking at our 3rd defeat in a row and potentially 11 points behind come Sunday, what is the crowd supposed to do? Sing a chorus of “we’ve got Guardiola?”

Hindsight is 20/20 now, but things looked increadly bleak before that 2nd half turnaround.
I saw this quote from Pep
"It's the same with our fans, they are silent for 45 minutes. They booed because we were losing, not because we played badly. We played good, we had more chances, expected goals from Tottenham is 0.89 so we were better."

Dreadful? I really didnt see dreadful. You're so bleak about our team.

Pricing out the working class fanbase due to extortionate ticket prices isnt going to help unfortunately. They wont be able to afford it and either the gloryhunters will take their place, or there'll be empty seats.

Club needs to to be doing their bit too!
I just do not get this working class thing.
Still looks like to me most fans in our home support are working class.
I have never met any fan that is not working class in the bus or tram pre or post match.

I bet the players got a bit of a shock hearing Pep complain about their lack of passion, fight and desire. Considering they had just completed an amazing second half fightback.

He's not talking about the second half of one game but the season so far. It also wasn't just leveled at the players on the pitch but the whole squad. Foden, De Bruyne, Cancelo, Walker all sitting on the bench and rightly so. World class players who at times this season have been just going through the motions, sloppy, lazy, giving the ball away, not pressing and tracking back like they used to. If they're happy resting on their laurels looking back at what they've achieved in their careers so far, Pep will have them out of the door before they know it, irrespective of their reputation. It's now or never for many in this squad from here on in.

When your pricing model lends itself to tourists, and there were plenty in EL3 last night, you are going to get flat atmospheres. Last night was an ideal opportunity to price the match competitively and appeal to the lapsed/local/young family fans. Over £100 for a parent & child is bang out of order.
It irritates me when multi-millionaire managers/players/owners call out what is a traditionally working class fan base.
We have an aging fanbase and the club need to address enticing the younger fans to the games, who massively add to any atmosphere.
maybe the North Stand expansion will address some of the issues. Who knows?
Totally agree mate tbh, I don't think the club understand what a big local young support this club has now, we've had a decade now of sustained success and have cornered the market now in young kids supporting City, United had it their own way for 2 decades and our fanbase lost its way.£68 for a mid week game is nothing short of a disgrace tbh for the fan who likes to pick and choose games-for me and my 10 year old son its a £150 night out with a bit of food, a hot drink and parking. the club is missing one big trick tbh.

The only difference between the 1st half and 2nd this evening - Same players, same system, just willing to take more risks

Pep is not beyond criticism

You think Pep told them to be half-arsed and slow in the first half and then said "right lads double time now" at halftime?

He's never sent a side out to play like they did in the first half, and all he did at HT is give them an absolute rollicking.

Yesterday's match proved it's not about Pep or his tactics or his selections. It's about the players and their collective intensity.

100% this. It's the only way to let them know it wasn't acceptable. I booed because standards had dropped not because of any sense of entitlement. They needed a kick up the arse. How else do we let them know?

Didn't Pep say he wasn't bothered by the booing, but that it took until half time for the crowd to get angry?

As humans we all often react in the heat of the moment. I have in the past said things about a particular player that is done without deep thought and is sometimes wrong. Having reflected on Pep's interview and listened closely to the 11minute presser on the OS I still think he was absolutely right to tell it how it is. The season could easily have drifted to an end with us finishing 3rd or 4th and being knocked out of the CL.

It is a balance to not make certain individuals a scape goat so after probably saying things behind closed doors and not having the reaction he wanted he had to generalise the current state of the club which included us all. As a fan I want it to be all of us against the world so have to accept a bit of criticism myself.

We have just had an unprecedented decade of domestic success and hand on heart I too have become a little complacent - expecting us to win every time we step on the pitch. I have also felt for some time we have lacked a certain edge. This year we all got a massive boost with Erling arriving and that kind of carried us before the WC but since we have been very flat. Of course it's a fine balance - I don't really want our players doing a Bruno or a Henderson and giving it to the ref all game but as Pep said last night we have a young lad targeted by constant fouls from behind and not one of our players were in the face of the ref or the Spurs players. Before games we see our lads giving high fives and hugs to international teammates - do that after battle and when you meet for dinner - for the 2 hours of a match day they are the enemy and need to be beaten.

Of course we don't know which player really leads behind the scenes - but to me it's clear Ferna was a big part of things off the field. Those to step into that role are different types - Gundo is a quiet thinker, Kev often hard on himself but still rages quietly, Ruben is perhaps the one who could step into Ferna/Vinny type shoes but has been injured and concentrating on that, Rodri again intelligent and possibly only just growing into a leadership role. Pep made reference to how Julian and Rico played because they are hungry having not won the title yet so he was referring to the more established players - I believe most will take it and come back stronger.

I remember the days when we all talked about how calm and relaxed Gentleman Joe was but from all accounts when he lost it he really lost it - difference was football was not 24/7 in the media spotlight so it was kept quiet.

So in summary we should not take any offence to what Pep said, it needed saying, perhaps in some small way even Pep needed to hear his own words, the players in particular need to realise that to remain great it's not all about being the best talent you have to work your balls off. I fully expect a big reaction in the next few games.

Apologies for the long post it's kind of cathartic - in a strange kind of way I feel better this morning after feeling a little like we were coming to the end of a golden period - I was losing my nut after the Southampton and Utd performances - so in that way I am back to being excited about the next few months and us having a real go at Arsenal and doing it all together.

Neither can Pep have it both ways?

I booed them off at half-time because it was not up to our standards and hasn't been for weeks.

Booing the performance is an important distinction, demanding the team find the level it has set and trying to get a reaction.

We played shit at Southampton and for an hour at United, and neither were in front of our own fans.

Pep sprinkled a few home thruths into his rant, some more than valid, but it lies somewhere in between.

It's reverse psychology for dummies and another example that Pep is also not the same person and easily triggered, whether citing net spend trophies, publicly digging out an overweight player, or playing Cancelo on the right wing and then hooking him.

The crowd is disengaged at times, but he's out of order for a few things and he would know it if he didn't live in a complete footballing, lavish bubble.

Our brand of football can be beautiful, but lacks intensity, pace and power, so the majority of the crowd mirror our football, passive until it produces an outcome or reaction?

Other factors will always include the ridiculous cost of tickets. If the Club wants middle class fans and foreign tourists, you will get the crowd you deserve.

City don't want some twentysomething off the local estate spitting bile and spending nothing at the tills while they are there.

Pep doesn't need to tell me this team is way off it.

Guess what, you are paid £20m a year, you see them every day in training, you pick the team.

Sometimes it is simply on Pep, or the players.

I would never tell another fan how to support the team, whether it be at the game or in their own front room.

I'm as hungry as ever for success, never complacent about what we have won.

I'm now 48, however. I'm not the stupid 18 year kid who once shamelessly hissed gas noises at Spurs fans, simply because everyone else did it, sang Munich chants and stood outside the away end goading away supporters.

I'm a dad, I want to sit and enjoy the game with my son, I've lived a fan era which has long since passed. United, Liverpool, I am out of my seat a lot more.

Performances and rivalries will always dictate an atmosphere and level of hostility, same goes for a sense of injustice.

Otherwise we are just self-aware Scousers or Palace fans.
Bang on Tolmie

The club advocate the new breed of supporter/customer its these fans that spend the money on merchandise, food and drink etc on their day to the match

I take my missus and twin lads to each game and now we are told no bags not even a small rucksack because it has handles because they want me to spend money on over priced food, drink

I stand up and I am told to sit down

I cant have a drink whilst watching my team as I am deemed not responsible enough, yes I know this is not just our club.

I sing and shout with passion as do my lads and we are looked at as though we are alien

Fans with half and half scarves watching the games through there phone and whatsapping that they are at the game, they don't engage with the game or fans next to them

Yeah, just saw his comments and am very disappointed. Seems even the former blues are now being captured fully by the media.

I suppose it should not be that surprising, given how anti-City (and Pep) they tend to be. In order to get air time you eventually have to tow the line… it’s just very sad to see it happen with the likes of Micah.

Someone from the Happy Flowers side of our support will reply to this mentioning a League One team in 1998, Stuart Pearce home games 06/07 and four titles in the last five years or whatever else is on the top blue bingo card and call you entitled and spoilt.

Pep is a master at pulling psychological strings with everyone, players, pundits, refs, fans, media etc. He knows exactly what he is doing. He gets our history, knows there's an ironic, sometimes fatalistic side to us - who else has a song like "We never win at home etc?, and periodically has to shake us out of it. Fans were appprehensive in the first half after the derby, the league cup and Everton result (maybe even Brentford too) and that grew as the team couldn't get going. But it all changed with the first goal! Having said that, the booing (imo) was mostly directed at the ref following his erratic approach to bookings, Spurs treatment of Rico and the blatant push in the back on Gundo.
