Pep’s Spurs (H) Post-Match Interview

Interviews don't have magical poweres. Pep was frustrated last night. He'll praise the players in his next interview. People pay too much attention to words said in a non-native language.

I'm one of Pep's biggest fans on here, but, IMO, there was nothing genius in that interview. Pep himself seems to be confused about our performances and tries different things to help the players perform at their best. He congratulated them for playing with personality at United, then he blamed himself and said the problems were tactical, last night he was critical of the players. Pep has a lot more info than us and knows better. In my humble opinion, the group is not as united as last season and also some players are not in form. The latter is likely to change, and the leaders should help the squad get more united and fight for each other.

You have to seperate the signals from the noise.

I agreed with some of the points Pep called out. I'm more concerned about what is going on in the dressing room. The players bar a handful seem like they're just going through the motions. The players need a rocket - maybe Gundo isn't that sort of leader who can galvanise the team in that way like Ferna did.

I think this was also making a point to Txiki and Khaldoon - sort players out or else!! Chelsea, Arsenal, RAGs all spending cash

Pep needs to understand the challenges for fans - football is pricing people out of the game. I agree our atmosphere could be alot better and the early leavers and having a half empty ground at the end of the game isn't great. Lets hope we bring it on Sunday and then it's upto the players to sort their shit out.

I just hope he doesn't get pissed off and walk. As i can't think of any manager out there right now who could replace Pep.

Pep did not change anything except the attitudes at half time. Mahrez didn't say they were told to be more direct in the second half, he said they were more direct which is what Jack's been saying Pep's been telling him to do for weeks.

You can look at Rico's touches first half vs second half here, there's no pushing up or change of position.

The same tactics, selection and formation in both half. One was shit, the other won 4-0.

You've argued a point I didn't make - I didn't say Mahrez said they were told to be more direct. Fair enough that Lewis didn't push forward more as tracked by passes & touches, but there is a definite difference in where he was playing. The first half his touches & passes were more central than in the second half. Wouldn't presume to state that was due to Pep, passion, slight injury etc.

You made a general point - that it proved it's about intensity not Pep etc - based on one half of football. Like I said, the recent performances aren't monocausal and it's daft to say it is.

Far too much emphasis being put on the atmosphere at games.Pep is wrong if he expects a electric atmosphere at most games, just as we are wrong to expect top level performances from the team every game.
The best teams teams raise their performances when the big games come around and the silverware is being handed out.We as fans raise our backing when crunch time comes also.
The best teams also coast along in the less critical matches and we do exactly the same, expecting anything else will just lead to disappointment

Good job he’s not managing his beloved Barcelona as the white hankies would’ve been waving last night at half time. And the boos last night weren’t aimed at the first half performance which actually wasn’t too bad compared to some we’ve seen over the years, they were aimed at the ref and ‘orrible Spurs.

Fair point re injuries, but he was alternating constantly even when they were fit. We have known for ages that Cancelo is useless at RB, the fact that he got replaced in the national team in the WC but that the Portuguese Danny Mills at the rags proves it further. I honestly thought he was one of our better players in the derby. I love Zinny but he always wasn't very attacking, the problem now is that we have a guy up front that feeds on deliveries but we don't have any player in the fullback positions (other than Cancelo) that can provide.
Mendy can whip a good ball in !!!!!

No, I didn't.

I said 90 minutes of football was the proof of what I've known all along, that the problem is not Pep doing stuff he's done for 6 years.

Makes sense now why many senior players were benched. Clearly the passion is not there at the moment. When you look at Rico and Julian you can see how hungry they are. I'm not a fan of booing and it was probably aimed at the Ref, bit maybe it opened the eyes of some of the players at half time.
Yes, the fan base probably got too comfortable but at £70 a ticket for a mid week game you are always going to get more tourists than passionate fans.

I would probably add Ake to that list too. The players showing the most drive are those who have not experienced as much success/appearances at City as most of the others. It does not appear to be a coincidence.

I don't really buy into narratives about players not trying. At the top end of sport, the differences are often marginal. It only takes a slight drop-off in terms of intensity, desire and determination to see significant differences in results. I think it understandable that intensity etc., among some players reduces after they have been successful. To be honest, I think it admirable that some continue to have at least the same intensity, desire and determination after much success.

A wake up call ???
We are second in the league. A league Pep has won for us four times in five years and you say it is he who needs a wake up call.
City fans are becoming (or possibly already have become) the self entitled, arrogant sods that we used to despise over the road.

We are all over the place and the defence is a shambles without a left back for balance. 2nd in the league is all down to Haaland and his goals, Take them away we will be in big trouble, You can not leak goals like we have this season and win the title ? We are giving teams a couple of goals and hoping we out score them at the other end.

As for being the self entitled, arrogant sods ? well, am proud to be shouting from the rooftops and holding my head up high about my team, it's called being champions and Proud

If fans are that important to the team why prevent them going to big deciding away games by ensuring family, friends and bodyguards take up a large minority of the away end?

I doubt any of them bothered last night.

After an incredible second half comeback ?

That pours cold water over his whole argument no ?

His argument is that we shouldn't have to rely on incredible second half comebacks because nine times out of ten they won't happen.

The point is for everyone to switch on from minute one and not to turn it on as a last resort.

Pretty sure I heard an interview with Pep a few years ago in which he said the best time to have a go at the players is when they are winning/have won. Adding that after a loss, criticism is counter-productive.

I have no idea how things work in the dressing room of a professional sports team but with Pep managing the egos of players at City, Bayern and Barcelona whilst being highly successful and working under a great deal of pressure, I can only presume he understands how to press their buttons to deliver results.

personally I like it that the issues are out in the open, maybe this is the kind of speech Ferna gave last season to rattle the players cage.

Key now is the reaction, from players, staff, supporters. roll on Sunday 2pm
Exactly this, this is not unusual at this level, maybe going public is but we've seen it before. Even Delph's appeal for the 'Basics of Football'.

I'm delighted to see that Pep isn't satisfied. Gives me a lot more confidence that we can do something this season.

Yea,we are far too invincible to concede goals aren't we,happens loads of times,Villa last day of season rings a recent bell

Let’s not turn his remarks into a huge drama.

Passionate words which we all have echoed this season. No need to feel attacked. We all want city to win and it was getting stale. The amount of threads here discussing the various issues proves Pep’s words have hit the mark.

The players better start responding. Fans have every right to tell them to do better. Fine line between being spoiled and knowing when it’s time to kick on again no matter how much past success. Exciting new chapter is emerging again. Pep will get the support he is asking for.

Glad to be out of the sleep walking malaise. Go find your old maine road coat of armour. We are city fans, the downtrodden, the weird and wonderful. You can say what you want about us but we all stand by and love our club. Once more unto the breach blues!

We got this shit.
