It's as if people seem to forget that we were 0-1 down with that selection and tactics before Sterling came on, Jesus went up top, KDB had options and we played how we normally play.

This is a classic example of the bullshit Pep has to deal with.

He sets us up in a way to exploit Real's weaknesses. We play really well in the first half, increasingly so as it goes on. The tactics and formation end up in 2 chances for Jesus that could/should be goals.

Second half, the tactics continue, we're controlling the game even more now, pushing them back, creating even more chances that we really should score, how are we not winning this comfotably and...Otamendi and Rodri give the ball away and they score against the run of play, from a dumb individual error.

And you blame Pep!?

So the fact Sterling comes on at 73 mins, which results in having two natural wingers and a natural forward whilst allowing our best player those three options he didn't have the previous 73 mins which then results in two goals and a last man sending off is just a coincidence then?

Sterling doesn't come on and Jesus is still stuck wide tracking back with Bernardo as a false 9, does that turn around happen?

Like he said though, that's football. Ultimately, his tactics had us outplaying the opposition, but we didn't score doing that. He made the change, freed the players up a bit and our players had us outplaying the opposition and we scored. They were able to do that because of what he has taught them.

It's all fine. Most of the time, his tactics are that good they'll win games for us. I do think it helps him to realise sometimes, he can just trust the players too, they are good enough as well.

Sterling came on and it helped because he's better at doing what Jesus was trying to do before, exploit the space Pep identified down the wings. But Sterling wasn't fit enough to start, so that was never an option.

We created better chances with his tactics before the substitution than the goals. Ultimately we scored off 2 massive individual fuck ups, that's a fact. Ramos should never get outjumped by Gabby, Courtois should always save that header and Carvajal should never dive in.

This is a fundamental problem with football fans, they only judge the outcome. We scored twice with Sterling on and they imploded so it must have been better. They probably would have collapsed if Jesus or Mahrez had buried any of the 5 chances they had under Pep's original system.

He set us up in a way that frustrated and confused Madrid from the first whistle, controlled the game and created chances....there's only so much the man can do.

Ah i get it now then, we just got lucky then. Nothing to do with any tactical and positional changes that has seen us dominate the last few years in England.

Ramos didn't get out jumped, he got done by the cross that was too high.

It's the same point though, I agreed with you and said the tactics were good enough to win most games. As you say, football isn't always like that. One on one, our players are good enough to make others make mistakes. It is possible to make both happen at the same time, that's when we play our best.

Add to that the best midfielder in the world was wasted further forward. He had one decent chance to break before he dropped deeper or had players ahead of him and that was when he left Modric and co for dead and slipped it to Mahrez. Once Jesus went upfront and Sterling came on we then had KDB with options in front of him.
