its corruption. Why? Money. Pep knows it, check the post match press conference around the 3:00 min mark it begins. The refs try to make the title race closer as it’s more interesting. More viewers watch and more money is made.
it’s also why Pep says whatever we as a club achieved, we did it ourselves i.e with no help from the referees.
Pep also mentions that we went out to Spurs in the CL due to Llorente handball goal which is the first time he mentioned it I believe.
There is corruption but it’s not as clear as you would imagine. The refs influence the game in certain actions. Last night, soft penalty for Soton given, clear penalty for Foden not given. In other games, Salah dives and gets a penalty. Other examples are giving 6 minutes of extra time when it should be really 3 minutes giving the “helped” team an extra push or maybe giving a free kick in a dangerous area for a foul that is never a foul after the player falls over. It’s little things like this.
I completely agree. Referees are as adept at game management as managers and players. I am convinced an agenda is set each season to try and engineer as exciting a season as possible. If you aren’t looking for it then it’s easy to miss but the signs are there. Not just the blatant ones like last night but the fouls given for and against us, blocking the players passing lanes, playing advantage when there is none and stopping play when there is. There are numerous ways to influence a game. When pep says we ‘did it ourselves’ that’s what he is referring to.
That’s my guess too, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Laporte and possibly Walker rotated out for the bigger games to come. Laporte is a brilliant defender and I never thought I’d say this, but he has cost us some goals through daft errors. I wonder if there’s an arrogance problem there because things seem to have happened behind the scenes before.Pep often gets irritated, usually with the dumb questions put to him by some of the media, sometimes with the blatant errors by officials in our most important games. Yet for me I think he was really annoyed with some of the defending last night - nothing gets him angry like Walker and Laporte booting the ball high into the air, gifting possession away. Southampton press better than most especially against us and last night two of our defenders couldn't handle it - you also saw Ederson getting miffed because some of the back passes to him were terrible. Pep likes calm possession and control.
I like that he sets such high standards and last night I think we saw a glimpse into his demands, it's 24/7 - He said before the game he is sorry some don't play as much as they want but they clearly have to suck it up for the good of the team. Great signs for the later rounds of the CL - I believe we will win it this year. What a manager we have.
Pep needs to go to the same spec savers as me then.Worse performance than the Derby! . You really need to go to specsavers DD. It wasn't great but nowhere near as bad as Sunday.
Mostly agree up to you saying it’s easy to miss.I completely agree. Referees are as adept at game management as managers and players.
