Pep Guardiola - 2022/23

I love Pep. But his obsession with having control is ruining this side. Against Liverpool, Newcastle, Brentford and Yesterday he's basically played either all of the midfielders of the wide forwards who don't create but keep the ball.

We've become incredibly predictable and boring to watch. Our entire attack is now built around Kevin trying to find Haaland, and we do that because the rest of the side can't contribute.

I keep saying it but the side is now Barcelona circa 2012 when they signed Fabregas. We have the ball but do absolutely nothing with it.

The squad for the money spent on it is poor. Two actual fullbacks, five midfielders for three positions and Mahrez, Grealish and Palmer are not serious options for a side wanting to win the CL.

Add to that we gave Arsenal two of their best players. The summer window was a disaster and people lapped it up because a few shiny new toys come in.

Pep needs to reinvent this team because at the moment it's totally predictable. Any side that's well organised with a back five can get a result
The spend per trophy return is remarkable.

Last season the same players won the league. Changes take time. Transitional season will bring crap performances. Pep and the club will make the necessary changes to see us prevail. I have no doubt. Interesting times ahead. The players and the coach need to find that extra gear. It’s all abit meh but I do honestly see us roaring back into life.

I still have faith with him that we can turn this around, back at 2020/2021 so many already given up on him when we have worst start of the season and yet we can bounce back and winning the league at the end.

a few games now ive been bored shitless for large chunks. We play some slow turgid shite at times.

But its Pep, who knows what the masterplan is. I had a look at squad stats yesterday regarding mins and hes sharing it around quite evenly, de bruyne and ederson aside. Compared to arsenal who have 7 players who have started every league game and two who are a game shy of that.

Im hoping his plan is to keep pace whilst managing effort and game time and then press hard in the second half of the season. This has been his plan most seasons.

i still have faith as hes deleivered so many times but this year feels a litlle flatter than normal and it could be 3x is just one too many and the players dont have it this season….

One thing I really,  really can't understand is why we haven't played our best front 3 since the start of October. We played Grealish - Haaland - Foden against Sevilla away, Wolves away and United at home and were completely dominant in all 3 games. At Wolves, all 3 of them got on the scoresheet and against United, Erling and Phil got hat tricks and Jack played one of his best games for us. It was all going brilliantly.

That front 3 hasn't played since.

Correct there is 22 league games left plus the cup champs leagues games! I know Arsenal have a young confident team but it will catch up with them mentally physically, it will just depend if we close enough to them to pounce like we have in the past..

Yesterday felt a bit like West Brom in Dec 2020

Slow , turgid , no creativity and conceding a sloppy goal out of nothing

Pep was trying to find a winning formula with the problem then being two fold, integrating Rodri, who was very unconvincing up to that point and moving away from Aguero , who was plagued by injury

it all turned following the game at Chelsea where we blew them away in the first half with Gundogan, Foden and De Bruyne running the show in the false nine formation.

we have similar issues this season in trying to integrate a player who is not struggling but the team still need to adapt to him

without the ball we are essentially playing with 10 men , which Pep is trying to counter by trying to control games and take very few risks.

this means we don’t create as many chances so we need to take the ones we do create, Stones scores yesterday and we win that game comfortably

problem is we aren’t sound at the back, not signing a left back was a ridiculous decision but him continuing with this set up is not countering this squad deficiency

he will get it right eventually, but will it be in time for us to defend our title is another question

Hope he does 20 years here. He knows how to keep coming back with new ideas to keep those trophies ticking over.

16/17 - an "off" season, no trophies
17/18 - Premier League and League Cup
18/19 - domestic treble
19/20 - an "off" season, League Cup
20/21 - Premier League and League Cup (CL runners up)
21/22 - Premier League
22/23 - an "off" season, who knows?

Forecast predicts that 23/24 and 24/25 will be very good seasons indeed.

(Worth bearing in mind that we were hovering between 4th and 8th, a few points off the pace, at this stage of the 20/21 season).
