Since Luton away we have been going back to our possession based game and slowly strangling teams into suffocation. Save for the late blip against Palace, it’s been hugely successful. What we’re also seeing now, however, is something different: fluidity. When we played with no centre forward, the man up front was rotated and did the pressing selflessly like the lead goose in a V formation. The rest of the players largely stayed in their shape. In this latest incarnation, though, we’re seeing players change position multiple times both in halves and in games yet still working effectively as a team. It’s making it extremely difficult for opponents to pick up players and that in turn tires them mentally much sooner; Sheffield United were surprisingly quick to tire today. Looking ahead, the only problem with this new style is that we have two players (Doku and Haaland) that are probably not as adept at interchanging, so once they are fit, accommodating them might be a challenge. Going to be interesting to see how Guardiola manages this.
