Pep's contract situation | 2 year extension confirmed! (pg1817)

I disagree.

People are overreacting. Because we lost our first game. In what feels like 20 years in the league.

Nothing has changes.

We still have Haaland Foden Doku Savinho, Gvardiol and other young players. We still need to find repalcements for senior players going past their peak. But still better than most at their peak.

One year more or less changes absolutely nothing. Nobody is doing a wholesale overhaul, Pep or another, one two or no years. It will happen naturally one way or another.

I would argue that a high quality, athletic central midfielder would fix basically all our problems (injury crisis notwithstanding).

I don't know exactly who (I liked the idea of Rice and Guimareas but neither happened) but if we can bring in someone of that age the team for next year could be:

Ederson

Lewis, Akanji, Dias, Gvardiol

Rodri, new CM, Foden

Savio, Haaland, Doku

Say the new CM is 24 or 25, that's an average outfield age of 25.5 and we can start looking to phase out Bernardo, Stones and Kovacic as squad players, for the next generation.

The reasons we're struggling right now are i) no Rodri, best in the world ii) injury crisis and iii) severe lack of athleticism in midfield.

We've been pretty shite for the last month but the situation is far from irretrievable.

2 years is the best you can hope for.

Pep can only work with what he’s got, Txiki has failed to improve the midfield situation year on year.
Its not just Txiki there a de-facto transfer committee, his role is to work with the manager to identify requirements then identify targets which need finance for the CFO and CEO to provide

Well they are all culpable.
Just because we’ve had some amazing success, doesn’t mean they are beyond criticism.

I absolutely agree that they deserve criticism just unfair to blame Txiki.
Made a massive mistake in persuading Walker, to stay I said 3 seasons ago he was on the wain, a replacement should have been purchased and Walker allowed to leave with some transfer fee recouped now we are stuck with him on a 3 year contract. Rico is not a fullback, he can be a stand in but we need a specialist preferably with pace

The biggest concern with a short extension is it usually or certainly seems to be that a lot of Peps signings take a full season to 'get' what's needed & if he's off then it'll really just be a wasted season in that respect.

We've been lucky Rodri is not only the best DM in the world in terms of passing/reading of the game but he is quite athletic. Another athletic midfielder next to him and we would be pretty much unstoppable.

Exactly.

You can see why the club identified Rice, Bellingham and Guimareas as options, but bizarrely failed to get any of them.

3 years on the wain ……. During those years we have won the league every year and also done the treble , there is no full back who could have done a better job the last three seasons , time may well be catching up with him now and personally I think it was clear yesterday he wasn’t anywhere close to being fit , but replacing Walker won’t be easy

Everyone knows better than Pep apparently.
