Pep's contract situation | 2 year extension confirmed! (pg1817)

I stagger at some of the comments on this forum at times.

A couple of examples:

1) peps style of play has been sussed out and is obsolete.
2) he’s too stubborn to change and surrounds the squad with mediocrity.

Let me respond in kind, you bunch of bellybutton fluff eating, clueless, Xbox/PS5 football manager cretins.

1) we won a fuckin trophy last year. A TROPHY!! There are only 4 we can play for, same as every other top team. Though the domestic cups are up for grabs by all domestic clubs, with the vast majority DREAMING of lifting silverware. (Just like I still do!)

2) why the fuck would he change!!! we’re in a period not too dissimilar to the twilight zone. No preseason, squad hit by bouts of COVID, injuries, new signings and leadership structure changes after the departure of key squad and staff members.

screw your fuckin heads on and stop it. We’re city, not some jumped up reactive fuckin club with no culture.

if pep stays fantastic, he’s our greatest ever manager. If he doesn’t, we get someone else, but we let him choose - he has earned that right.

what we don’t do, is bitch and moan like a bunch of fuckin rags or dippers!

embarrassing!
Everyone is entitled to their opinion are they not?. If people say it's time for a change then so be it, I'm in the not bothered either way camp at this moment in time, my main concern is that I think Pep has lost his passion for the game in these shit times, not necessarily for City but football in general. I think he'll go at the end of the season and be out of football for at least a year after. My opinion, cheers.

Well, you'll find a few different ones mate.

I can understand fans being a bit despondent and a bit critical of our manager, the team seems to have lost it's vitality and a winning edge.
Players that scored for fun not so long ago seem out of form and jaded.
Pep comes over as a bit lost and vague in interviews, it seems he might be worn out or just plain fed up, he has lost his sparkle and it seems so has the team.
He doesn't emit any positivity in interviews, just looks like he doesn't want to be there.
You can’t say things like that on here ..it’s embarrassing don’t you know. All Empires fall, all dynasties fall. I feel that is where we are now and it was an amazing ride but Pep’s reign was only meant to last 3 or 4 years. The blind unquestioning faith some will have is apparent in religion but annoying in football. The huge issue is what are our owners doing about the next phase of the project. Do they have a cunning plan ? I hope so.

Unfortunately I think the end is nigh for Pep. In many respects I feel as though my worst fears are already being realised this season. I was hopeful post lockdown that Pep would find a new impetus but I just don't see it.

My best guess is that similar to Pellegrini, come December/January City will announce that it's Pep's leaving and name his successor.

So pep is immune to criticism then in your mind? You maybe happy with a league cup and finishing miles off the champions Liverpool but I can assure you Khaldoon and Pep himself will know with the resources we have this is not acceptable.

whether you like to admit it or not we are one of the biggest clubs in world football and with that comes huge expectations and the need to win.

We have regressed hugely over the last few seasons if you can’t see that then I do not know what to say to you. We have gone from a fast aggressive side to a timid slow side who constantly come unstuck against fast counter attacking sides (arsenal fa cup semi, Lyon, Leicester, wolves x2 last season, scum x2 last season etc).

Pep does not deserve a contract extension as it stands and if it was anyone else managing us 90% of posters would agree but no we all have to bow down thank Pep for managing us and even let him choose his successor. Ffs wake up we are a a global powerhouse and any manager in the world would be lucky to manage us with the fantastic resources we have.

What I find embarrassing is some posters see Pep as untouchable, and The way our board look at him like lovesick teenagers begging him to sign an extension. Quite simply he has to earn one and on current form he doesn’t warrant it. Thankfully at least Pep himself recognises this

He might have been good with us. Is Eric Garcia better than him?
There is no way Harry Maguire could of being food with us, Maguire gets done basically on every single 1 v 1 and that's with 2 holding midfielders on front of him and sometimes 5 at the back.
Imagine him with us the way we get counter attacked he would get torn to pieces.
Garcia is shit and I'd still have Garcia ahead of Slanhead.

No one says pep is untouchable. Embrassing is calling his tactics as finished/obsolete and he is done for .They are not . He is probably not able motivate players with his tactics. We saw two seasons of good football with those tactics. I however agree if pep is not able to sell the squad his tactics he will/should go. Infact he himself said so. Embrassing is the unnecessary hate . Those should be avoided. I don't think Pep is someone who will unnecessarily force his stay.

I’m torn
In the one hand I think we should keep pep as there is no one better
But on the other hand it is clear he won’t change and will keep doing The same things Like Rodri and gundo
So I think it might be time for a change And freshen things up
Problem is we almost seem to have the whole club bowing down to pep and that’s not a good place to be

Agreed, he's a brilliant coach but there are others out there.
After all, Bayern Munich have done ok i suppose since he left

But it took awhile...

Apart from Heynckes as an interim coach it was the third coach after Pep that really is a success. 4 wasted years...

My thoughts entirely.
Posters should be able to have an opinion without being insulted. Personally I'm always interested in others opinions whether I disagree or not.
Surely that's the objective, purpose and reason for a forum.
Not on here, after 14 years you should know better :)

Dipper? Rag? Opinions? Moaning? I can acknowledge the good work being done by the manager, board and players.

The circumstances of covid and no pre season can and must be taken into account. However, in a reasoned debate and in order to progress we must also look at our failures.

Boardroom - Recruitment is the problem. Pep, txiki and soriano have got it wrong too many times. The approach needs to change and maybe the personal when it comes to deciding transfers.

On a positive note: they have achieved many great feats with the CFG and with commercial revenue. Getting Pep in board was/is fantastic.

The great team we had is now gone. The high standards set have eroded for 2 seasons. We could afford to be prudent and judge other clubs on their reckless spending as we had an exceptional group of players.

Players bought have not stepped up on the whole and this is why we are now in a mess.

So what you're saying and with that in mind if a new manager comes in and he didn't win a trophy in his first season you'd want him out?

Now this is what happens when fans mindsets turn to a sense of entitlement and don't allow the process of transition and rebuilding, ala Rags & Dippers we could have to go through a number of managers until we find the right fit again.

Sometimes the right fit is under your nose given time, like I say we need to be careful what we wish for as the grass isn't always greener

Looking back. I think it was criminal by Pep to play any first-team players in the Carabao Cup. If there was a year to play exclusively academy players in that competition. It was this year. And then he complains about the fixture congestion and recovery time.

So what do we put this down too ?

The old spine of the team that kick started our trophy hunt under the guidance of Mancini is basically gone - only Aguero is the left.

Sergio has always had injury issues but his age means we are more likely to see him injured than not now

Pep came and took time to settle but eventually got the team playing some of the best football we have seen - with a healthy amount of that spine still in place.

The we lost our proper leader both on and off the pitch in Vinny and then we lost the greatest player to don our shirt in Silva amongst others who departed such as Yaya

Pep has said it himself that he normally only stays for his contract time and may take an extra season - to stay any longer than that is down to how the players are still responding to his tactics and gameplan - remember when he domestically dominated with Bayern but could not in Europe, the Bayern players started to question and doubt that the style was working. So Pep knows this has a huge possibility of happening again

Pep has brought domestic dominance, but lets not kid ourselves. The owners want European success as well and that is why he was also brought in, but it has not materialised

He has brought his philosophy of football which will hopefully stay at the club once he does depart, with the next manager taking on board the ideals but just tweaking and improving them

I honestly think that halfway through this season we will know what the end game will be, he will either enter into unknown territory and continue this rebuild or he will leave and a new manager will take us forward.

I think it will not only be results but how the players are responding to what they are being asked by him. European games are critical this season because our squad know they have dominated domestically but the players will want to win in europe

The biggest injustice in my eyes is the level of talent we have had at our club since Mancini brought the FA Cup home....we have failed in Europe.

If Pep calls it a day he will not be a failure, domestic dominance which has not been achieved before will see to that. He has changed the way in which football is played over here, but as we have seen and know, the premier league is the best league when if comes to adapting to the club that sits on the top and combat their style - that is something Pep is finding out right now.

As said by others, we can continue to win some games just because of a lack of quality of the opposition when they break on us - but those games at the moment are few and far between

It might well be time for a change, and it could well be that the next manager that comes in is the one that brings both domestic and European success at the same time - only time will tell.

If however Pep stays then, then the club are going to have to make changes to our forward line and midfield in the next window and changes that are of a high quality. There are a handful of players that need replacing

It was never going to be an easy ride once that old spine was gone - it was what we started identifying our success with and we all were on the that journey from the beginning with the players.

Looking back to last season we all on this forum thought that the 2 previous back 2 back title winning years had taken its toll, which resulted in a 25pt swing in the dippers favour.

As we know there has been a pandemic since then, no proper pre season etc etc and the players look like they are not functioning at all. It has been evident in our games that the movement of the front line has regressed, with players not even looking to move into the correct positions or create anything....instead we are seeing the same style of pattern week in week out.

It isn't rocket science how teams should set up against us anymore and that is now on Pep's shoulders to work out and fix and if he cant and especially in europe then I think we know the end outcome that he himself will choose

I fear that you may be right.

But what happens when/if they announce it is his last year? With Pellers the announcement was February 1 (IIRC) - after which we were utterly dreadful and nearly dropped out of the top 4. In a year where I believe we took 15 of the first 15 points on offer.

It feels like the season is fucked if this happens. But on the other hand there feels like such a malaise is surrounding the club - and that the manager may be a huge part of it. Look at the player reactions to the Lyon debacle. And what since then would seem likely to give the squad a whole lot of confidence?

No easy answers here sadly.
