Pep's contract situation | 2 year extension confirmed! (pg1817)

As long as it ties him to us for the rest of his natural days i'll be happy :-)

Great news that it is defo happening. I have a red mate to text and explain the 50 quid bet we had is not looking good for him. Bet was simple, he reckoned Guardiola would be gone after 3 seasons so we stuck 50 quid on it as i was adamant he would extend. His handshake was so assured to, shame, it was a very good handshake.

Pep doesn't actually want to be that figure though.

He wants Txiki etc to take most of that off his hands, so he can get on with the football. I'd be delighted for him to be here ten years, but he is such an intense character, that it's unlikely he could maintain his level for that long & as soon as his battery starts to wear down, he'll be gone, instantly.

Just to put another perspective on it, it's possible he's finding the job a little easier and less stressful now compared to when he got burned out at Barcelona as he is much more experienced as a manager. And some of that stress was due to conflict with the board which doesn't exist at City. Also it's my understanding he only did 3 years at Bayern because he'd made a promise to eventually come to City so I'm optimistic at the moment that he might stay at least 5 years. He has the challenge and opportunity of permanently establishing City in the elite tier of football clubs not to mention leaving an indelible stamp on English football as a whole, that has to be a pretty big motivation for the kind of character he is.

If people don't already, I certainly do, they will look back on Pep's managerial career once he's retired and he will be regarded as the best of the lot. I'm sure. The man is a genius!

Wenger (bless him) actually changed the premier league when he arrived with the style of football he brought. Pep's doing the same and it's for the rest to step up to the challenge now. United under Fergie managed to step up to most challenges that came their way but with Jose there, I can't see it. He's past it. Pochettino could but he needs a bigger budget to work with. Klopp, perhaps. Conte probably in the best position but then Chelsea always manage to implode.

I hope so. It's easy to forget that so many of our players are 23 or under — Sane, Sterling, Jesus, Stones, Mendy, Bernardo — and will only get better. Seeing those players approach their peak while continuing to nurture our best academy products ought to be incentive enough to sign on for another two years.

As you mention, when he was at Bayern, it was a poorly kept secret he'd join us but now, there are no other teams or projects that would make sense for him to sign onto after City. Once he finishes with us, I think he'll take an extended hiatus from the game as he's said multiple times he doesn't want to be a football manager for life.
