Pep's Formations for 2016/17

This discussion is pretty pointless.

“Guardiola has no time for these schematics and dismisses them as ‘lists of telephone numbers’. One of his mentors, Juanma Lillo goes further: ‘You’ll never see players in those positions, not even when they first come out onto the pitch.’

This.

I suspect we'll see a wide variety of formations, just like at Bayern.

I really like the idea of playing 3 - 5 - 2. I think if it's done correctly it would really help us dominate games plus I think we've got the perfect players for the formation.

I would love to start off next season with something like this

............................Hart........................

.....Stones......Kompany.....Otamendi...

Zabaleta............................................Alaba

........................Gundogan...........................

..............Fernandinho.....Silva....................

..............................Kdb.................................
............................Aguero.............................

We don't have the players though as Mancini proved when he tried it. We need Wingbacks to play three at the back. Currently Angelino is the only guy in the squad suitable.

Two things strike me that he seems to pretty much always have ..and we have neither.

1. At least one young, fit, energetic fullback

2. Deeper lying CM who can play out from the back, both by linking the play but also playing killer passes as well.

I think he will tinker with the formation and team a lot and agree with the OP view of who will fit in but expect priority in the transfer window to fill these two gaping holes in our squad.

I quite like the idea of his original Barca system with flying full backs and a very deep DM, which is a role I think we have a few candidates for in Kompany, Fernandinho and Denayer. Something like:

Hart

- Kompany ----- Otamendi
Zabaleta --------------------------------------- Clichy
Denayer

Fernandinho ----- Nasri -------

- Sterling -------------------------------------- De Bruyne
Aguero
Gone with current players for now but would like to see some other wing back options, a CM replacement for Yaya and another direct winger/attacker. I also like Maffeo but see him as more of a CB than a WB.

But again, and i see this a lot, why does everyone think that we pay 49 mil for sterling for him to not play?

Just because you pay a lot for a player doesn't mean they are guaranteed to start. I'm not comparing the players but Torres cost chelsea 50 million and he was left out. Im just not sure if Sterling will fit in to peps system I hope he does because I like him, hopefully he'll turn out to be our Douglas Costa however going off this season he doesn't seem to have that cutting edge AT THE MOMENT. Like I say, hopefully he'll improve, sink or swim time for him next year

You miss the point. You really think we spent all that money on a young layer without peps approval?

Are you asking if it was peps decision to sign Sterling? If so, I don't think so, I'm sure sterling was on the radar before any concrete plans for Guardiola were in place. I think Sterling was signed because he was the best candidate for what was necessary at the time. If you think back we needed a pacy wide man who would stretch the play and someone to fill the English quotas, Imo Sterling was the only real player to tick that box. Also I don't think we ever intended on paying so much for him but were forced to due to the lack of other options. Then again you might be right, it's all guess work on my behalf!

Paul Pogba tells Sky Deutschland: Pep Guardiola is a football icon, you want to learn from him. "Right now I am still with Juventus, but clearly if you have chance to work with someone like him, you can only develop further."

I just can't wait to see us trying different formations, with players not always playing in their so called "favourite" positions but set up to exploit the weaknesses of the opposition. The one thing that excited me the most is the intensity of the pressing and ability to regain possession quickly.

Its well known pep has been coming here for ages mate. And that english quota is bollocks. We could have just kept denayer, but we chose not to.

Yeah i like this. As much as I like the idea of Denayer at CDM, i don't think Pep will risk it in his first season in the Prem so can see him signing a more experienced CDM.

I've added my suggestions for signings based on recent links and rumoured targets, tried to be as realistic as possible (basically excluding Alaba, Neymar, Messi, Suarez).

If that quote is true then it would seem to be very good news, think we all see Pogba as the 1st choice replacement for Yaya, lets get it done : )

I think Denayer would suit that role perfectly so I can't imagine a top level signing being brought in to hinder his progress. Perhaps Kompany is an option there with Stones (or similar) sitting next to Otamendi?

I think wing backs are the main area where our squad either don't have much experience (only seem suited to full back) or are shit (Kolarov). Angelino could be an option but I can't think of many top class RWBs that might be on the market (Rodriguez on the other side?).

Would love to see Pogba and a top class winger/forward as an alternative to Sterling and KDB.

I can imagine Denayer being pefect for Pep, but he has yet to kick a ball in the Prem (Otamendi will tell folks how that is much more difficult than it appears ), so it's not guaranteed Pep won't sign another cb if he decides to get rid of Otto or Mangala or both imo. I imagine that will be decided as much on whether he thinks their passing is good enough, as on their qualities as defenders.

All manner of weird & wonderful shit is possible I imagine, & whilst we can all try to second guess it, & probably be right on some of the formations, we could be in for a few surprises re players bought & sold, as what we see in a player is not neccessarily what he sees.

All good points.

My hope is that Pep will have a good look at all of our young players on the fringes. If he likes the look of someone then I also hope he won't sign youngish first team players that will sit ahead of them in the pecking order for years, causing our academy players to leave. In my example above, if Pep comes in and thinks Denayer could do a job for him in that DM role over the next few years (even if not immediately) then I hope he doesn't sign a young DM (Weigl?) who will just limit Denayer's chances. If the signing is flexible enough to play other roles then fair enough (I'm not clued up enough on Weigl to judge).

I personally think Mangala will be out of the door with a more competent ball-playing CB (perhaps Stones although he's not convinced recently) coming in.

The thing is Pep seems to like a stable 16 senior players and rotates them around different positions. If Aguero was injured I could see him just playing Silva or Nasri as a false 9.

I think he'll bring through some young players but I wouldn't expect them always getting games. Having said that if we don't start to get more young players in the first 11 and subs we just won't retain them.

Really though, we could be looking at a turnover of about 90% of this squad during Pep's time here. So maybe even if he does sign players who, on paper, potentially threaten the futures of some highly rated academy lads, it might actually be the kids who end up in the squad or team alongside those newly signed players, & the well known, older guys who get phased out, mabe even get sidelined early on, if the kids do as Pep asks & the experienced players don't.

It's all very exciting, as, in truth, we haven't got a clue & I don't think many of the players have either. Zabba even, has mentioned that he doesn't know if he'll be here next season or not.

I think this is going to be my favourite period of watching City, irrespective of whether we win stuff straight away. Watching it all unfold & the various attempts at tactics, formations etc (& let's face it, some of Pep's ideas may not work, it's the Prem), I just think it's going to be so interesting as well as entertaining, seeing how he tries to solve this new problem, in a new environment, with everybody trying to stop him.

Of course he may just have us battering everybody from day one, but that would be interesting too ;)

Me too but we will have to rein in our expectations a little, particularly for the first part of next season.
We'll have the usual settling in period for new players plus additional time for our holdover players to adjust to new tactics and formations.
We must not get too upset if we drop an early league game to a Stoke, Watford or even a promoted team.
I'm sure jealous Rags and media hyenas will be sniggering away if this happens but all will be well in time. There will be disappointing days but plenty of scintillating ones also.

Roll on the next phase.
