PES 2011

I'll probably buy it, but solely due to there being no competition (Fifa's wank, and always has been, bar 09).

Personally I preferred last year's Pro Evo; it had a really solid feel to it, it was responsive, it was unspectacular but it felt like a return to the PES of old. It felt like a step in the right direction.

From the new demo I get the impression that Konami has overhauled the game again, completely unnecessarily as far as I'm concerned.

It just feels too arcadey. The AI is poor, and there seems to be a return to any sliding tackle resulting in an opposition free kick regardless of whether you win the ball first or not (which tainted an already dreadful game in PES 2009).

Like I say, I've only played the demo, so there's a part of me which hopes our resident PES expert Ono can swiftly reply to this and ease my concerns, but there's just something about this game which nags at me, I've just got a feeling of overwhelming disappointment.

Maybe I expected too much, and I can't make a complete judgement until I've played the final version of the game, but my initial impressions aren't great.

Haha. To be honest, the most fun i've had out the demo has been with Internacional vs Chivas in the Copa Libetadores. The game is slower and i love using D'Alessandro.

I could see what Konami did with PES09 and PES10 where they made first touch variable between different players. For example Micah Richards turned like an oil tanker compared to even someone like Kompany. This lead to complaints of it feeling clunky and robotic, but Konami were just trying to put more emphasis on first touch. I'd rather have that clunkiness than put up with "Pele-on-Ice" abilites that you have with every player on Fifa. (that's the only term i can think of to describe the skating sensation).

Problem was 09 and 10 the clunkiness was probably detrimental to the game, and there was a vast amount of other errors which contributed to a pretty poor showing, which was bad considering 08 was also terrible.

I have to say i'm loving the demo. Players still have variable first touches depending on body balance and technical ability. It feels less clumsy whilst still retaining that player individuality.

There are probably elements of the game that feel arcadey but all in all i think it does a fairly good job of replicating football. The AI in the full game is a little better it seems so that's a bonus. I love the passing system, and the shooting system is good once you get used to it.

It just makes me think much more than Fifa 10 and 11 did/have. (I agree on Fifa 09 being the best as it happens - loved it for a full year). The problem's with Fifa started when they introduced 360 movement. There's no inertia between the player and the pitch anymore. No friction. It feels odd, and very fast. Feels like you can skate around the pitch at any angle regardless of what the laws of physics would normally restrict.

All i can suggest for 11 is maybe play longer games using the -1 speed setting and maybe use 'crapper' teams. Mess about with the tactics and find something that works for you. Maybe play on top player, if you weren't already.

My main gripes with it are that the goalkeeping animations are still quite poor,. although improved, and that player switching is poor at times. Other than that i can't think of many. There are some, but nothing that spoils the experience for me.

I'm playing on the pc so there is a game extender, so i play 25 minutes games so the game doesn't feel rushed. It feels more like a simulation. Are you playing on a console?

It's interesting how people see things differently. the radical overhaul of last year's engine seemed necessary to me and I would argue it is definitely less 'arcadey' than last year. As for slide tackling...if anything I'd argue it's almost too effective...I've been sliding in with Van Buyten all week and as long as you keep your eye on the ball and wait for the opponent to knock it a bit ahead of them before going in you always emerge with the ball.

I love the dribbling with Robben, Ribery, Messi et al. - cutting inside is so much fun and the game really rewards you for reading the defender's momentum to turn them.

My only major gripe from the demo is that shots sometimes inexplicably float towards goal very slowly...even if the player is off balance or whatever they should still put more power on it or at least scuff it along the ground....hopefully this has been changed. Apart from that shooting is spot on and I am scoring a nice proportion of screamers to misses - making each one feel special and not cheap. Also the ball doesn't hit the post 5 times a game like in Fifa so it's actually frustrating and not expected when you hit the woodwork in PES.

Thought that was an excellent review...I'm dumbfounded by how many negative reviews this game has received with reviewers going on about flaws which have been eradicated. I suspect a lot of reviewers played one or two games, got a bad first impression (heavily influenced by their experiences in previous iterations) and lazily wrote it off.

Btw I'm getting this for PS3...anyone know where I can get a good option file and how long it will take for one to come out if there won't be one on release day?

I agree mate. It would be interesting to see how many of the negative reviewers have been avid Fifa players for the last few years. I say that because they're totally different games. You almost need to wipe Fifa from your memory to play this game as it should be played. It's completely different.

<a class="postlink" href="http://www.evo-web.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.evo-web.co.uk/</a>

That's the best site for option files imo. You'll need to register because the downloads are in the editing forum which is hidden unless you're a member. Only takes two secs to register though.

Haha yeah you're right about Fifa. It occurred to me if I had read a lot of reviews slating Fifa 11 I would probably have taken to it less kindly than I did. I would be interested to what extent people's views on both games have been coloured by reviews and not playing the demos properly.

Cheers for that link, now matter how much gameplay is king, I do quite like good presentation in my footie games. I'm expecting COMS to be appearing with the new stadium editor in place.

With the option file, the only thing Fifa does better IMO is nice looking grass :).

Downloaded it and will definitely be buying it when it comes out. It's got problems (some of which can be solved by editing player stats) but it's a major improvement over 2010. Whilst it's a different take on footy than FIFA it is beginning to rival it now imo.

The graphics are top notch

You can spend ages in the replay screens. Some of the facial expressions (for example how they stare at the ball when it's in flight) are quality :)

Where did you get these pics from mate, are City on offical team on it this year yeah ?

I took the pics. I've downloaded the city kit (and edited it myself to make it more realistic) The faces are like that in PES from the start. No mods needed for that.

edit: No, city aren't official but it's easy to DL community patches straight into the game for the PC version. The console version has option files that you can download and transfer, which is great but not as instantly changable as on the PC.

My video capture skills are pants...

Nice. I've scored one with Tevez like that but much closer. From that far out I've been trying to blast them in with Kolarov :D No luck so far.

I've found that you've really got to spend some time in the training mode to really appreciate PES.

Got to admit lads - this looks absolute quality. Fifa 11 came last night - spent 4 hours on it and it's pretty average really! Goign to buy this and get into the PES scene this year. Can you do clubs etc on PES like FIFA with virtual pro?
