Pesky Do Gooder Lawyers force HMRC to tax Uber

Ha ha ha - just watching a guy from Uber - who have said as of tomorrow it will comply with the law and consider all its drivers "workers" - dress it up as a win for them as it brings clarity to the issue.

If it was so good why did they spend 6 years in the courts trying to deny this should be the case? They seemed happy enough with the clarity they thought they had already.

Do these people think we are all thick?

It's a difficult decision for many 'self employed' people. I'm retired now, but for the last few years of my working life, I was a self employed employee, like an Uber driver. Bits of it pissed me off, like no holiday pay, but in general I preferred the benefits of choosing when I worked. In some respects I was my own boss, and the first question I would be asked if I was phoned up when the company was busy was 'are you working tonight?'.

I used to chat to people at the time, and told them that, on balance, I preferred being self employed. I understood all the arguments about exploitation, those rich twats getting away with not having pension and national insurance contributions to pay, but in spite of all that, if I was back in my old job, and I had the choice, I would remain self employed.

It suited me, but it didn't suit everyone for a whole host of reasons, and fair play to them for taking it to court and winning. I tip my hat to them.

Same here - spent my working life mostly in unionised salaried jobs but took redundancy at the end of 2017. Been on contracts here and there ever since - decent money but the thing is as well as the arse ache of sorting tax and NI its no future for the younger me. Leaving my job allowed me to pay off my mortgage and as the kids are now earning and away they are not a burden so my outgoings are very manageable - I have one possibly two pensions to take this year when I turn 60 so given the IR35 rules coming in etc I am thinking fuck it I'll just sack it all off.
Funny thing is all the contracts that come my way are because of experience, qualifications and reputation I have built up in the last 4 years free-lancing. Once again our business friendly govt stripping an industry of vital knowledge and experience based upon a lack of understanding of the real world. Hey ho.
