Peter Barnes a true gentleman

One of my favourite players
Did he not chip pat jennings towards the north stand in a 5 nil win against spuds
Think he put him on his arse if my memory is right

100%. One my favourite games and favourite goals. Brilliant dummy then chipped him . Celebration included rubbing his belly laughing

As a life long blue and watching city in the 70s with Barnes, Watson, big Joe in goal etc when I was a mere 6 years old its was unbelievable to be meet one of my child hood heroes.
What a true gent, we spent 30 mins chatting about football, life etc and I will cherish that time for ever

Thank you so much Peter
Peter and Dave were my favourite players when I started supporting city. In those days I probably saw them play for England more times than city.

It was December 1957, I was in the scoreboard end. I remember it well.
The last match played before I was born. I don't actually remember it, (obviously) but years ago I checked how we had played during the 57/58 season. That particular game stood out as a big win with especially with Ken Barnes on the scoresheet.

Imagine so many penalties for us... we will be lucky to get 3 all season in the PL!

Was in the North Stand for that game. It was before the seats went in. To see a young kid jink the master of his profession and sit him down was wondrous to those of us with ambitions to be the next Peter Barnes.

My Dad and his Dad, Ken, were mates and he had Peter come to a charity do at our pub one time. My sister was hot for him! I remember her getting dressed up for him and doing her hair and everything! I thought she was daft, of course! “It’s Peter Barnes yer daft sod! What’s he going to see in you? Yer my sister!!”

They actually looked like they’d have made a good couple now I look at the picture with older eyes!! And, they BOTH turned out all right! ;/)
I saw the picture and who had posted it, then read your post, I honestly thought it was you. ;)

I met Peter with my then young son at an open day shortly before Maine Road closed, a gentleman with a stare that scared my little boy.

Im a tad too young to remember barnes first time round. England international very young before allison moved him on with Owen.
His career seemed to fade after leaving City.

Was he in top form when he left for WBA?
How good would he have been if he stayed at maine road?

I recall his return in 87(?).

I remember vividly where I was when I heard the news that Peter and Gary Owen had been sold to West Brom by Malcolm Allison. I was about to set off to the Lake District on a camping holiday with a few mates. To top it all off it pissed it down all weekend as well....

My favourite City goal. Several dummies on the edge of the area left Jennings totally bemused. Peter hardly had to chip it, he just floated it past Jennings.
Barnes was a fabulous player. Aged 19, he had Wembley roaring in a friendly vs Brazil as he exhibited his mesmerising wing play. Naturally, big Mal sold him!

Was always a bit of a challenge getting results and football updates when on a Youth Hostelling or camping trip.

One memory is getting hold of a Sunday paper which had a picture of Willie Donachie booting a West Ham pitch invader up the arse, and the accompanying report of a 1-0 win.

That goal came up one evening during one of our beer meets and someone asked Pete what went through his head as he was approaching Pat Jennings, was he thinkin how he was going to beat him, to paraphrase him "no just went ice-cold and didn't think about it, if you do you mess up. Just what comes natural"
Easy :-D

Was my favourite player as a kid and seeing him play in my first ever visit to Maine Rd in 1977 has never left me.
He did break my heart also a year later when him and Gary Owen were due to appear at the United Services Reform club in Heywood to meet fans for signatures etc. He didn't show (can't honestly remember the reason) so Gary Owen had to suffice for me.

Was fortunate enough to meet Ken and Peter at an event at Bolton's ground back in the 90's. They both couldn't have been nicer chaps and gave us their time willingly to talk about all things City.
