Peter Barnes

I think he threw a fair at it..unwisely in a lot of cases...i think he was a blue
.peter and ken thought so too..according PB
Give him the benefit of the doubt, he was a self centred, narcissistic masochistic arsehole. With a fairly unsuccessful pubic hair transplant.

;-()

Are you saying selling a team of internationals for modest sums & replacing them with overpriced players of promise from the second tier, seemed perfectly rational to Swales & he never questioned it, even from a businessman's point if view? :-/

I was a kid & even I could see what a shit decision it was...
No. I’m saying the exact opposite.

Although i watched him live often when I was a kid I didn't realise how good he was. Just watching some of his goals and assists made me realise what a player he was. He scored in the league cup final when he was only 19.
Lovely bloke too who loves to chat football

Pat Jennings transferred from Spurs to Arsenal in August 1977.
My memory is that Barnes dumped him on his arse in the home game against Arsenal just as he had in the Spurs game the previous season.
I can't find any footage of the Arsenal game but it's a memory I've had all these years.
Wouldn't surprise me if someone proves me wrong but it could be the Arsenal game you're thinking of and it could have been at the Platt Lane end.

You know what? I think you're right. Strange that there's no footage of that match. And my memory of the goal is that Barnes ran from somewhere near the halfway line, and just left everyone in his slipstream before dummying Jennings superbly.

Its out there and v spurs at home, just seen it on big match revisited

So Swales questioned it & STILL sanctioned that madness? WTF! :-/
Yep! In my 2012 history of the club I quoted some of those involved from that era, including signings that followed like Steve Daley, and included the line: ‘ Despite the indications that there were some issues with judgement, Peter Swales continued to back his management team…’

Ego of many involved comes into play and there has been a twisting of the truth by some on the board at the time who later on wanted to claim they had nothing to do with Swales’ I’ll judgement but they forget that they’re on film and elsewhere publicly backing Swales or even claiming credit at the time. Ian Niven definitely played his part in the return of Allison and he certainly knew him better than Swales.

I suppose if you've brought Big Mal back to the club as a Messiah, you've got to be seen backing your man, but good fuckin grief, even if you know little about football, what sense does it make selling your prized assets at below market value & replacing them with worse at vastly inflated prices?

Even worse is you telling me they've spent the last 40+ years blaming each other & none taking responsibility!

Having said that, those involved virtually bankrupted City & left us financially stricken for decades as we struggled to recover from that most crazy period in our history. Don't suppose I'd readily want to own it or want that calamity on my CV either... )(

Not going through this thread as it's going to be the usual bollocks. Swales out/Big Mal was a failure - all shit we've been aware of for decades. My point will only be about Peter. He's a real blue. I've met a few ex City players but few love the club like him. Paul Lake/David White/Gary Owen/Peter Barnes love the club. We have a lot of people who say they do since we have become winners.
