I remember years ago watching German football with my dear old Dad, who didn’t speak a word of German.

At one point, he said to me, "The commentator doesn’t say much,".

Having watched some clips of the great Kenneth Wolstenhome, he didn’t say much, either, which is the way it should be.
 
It's amazing and also sad in another way to reflect on just how long Tyler has been commentating on football. If memory serves, he replaced Keith Macklin at Yorkshire TV in the mid 70s. That's nearly 50 years of continuous commentating which is incredible when you think about it. He is clearly well past his sell by date and should have been replaced at Sky years ago.
 
The problem is there isn't really any tough competition to challenge him, Bill Leslie and Rob Hawthorne are the only real others. Surely Matterface can't be the best young commentator out there?

Tyler was on the production credits for this week's Big Match Revisited from 1975. Brian Moore was decent enough ditto Barry Davies or Gerald Sinstadt. As tv anchor you had Des Lynam who whatever his faults was a proper journalist. Contrast that with Lineker whose know(fuck)all act has worn out. Mind you Mark Pougatch on the other side is a natural tranquilizer. As has been said it was more about knowing when to not say anything and let the pictures do the work. Most commentators and pundits are beyond awful. Personally I think Souness is knowledgeable and fair Alex Scott is interesting and I always found Don Goodman alright. Joleon Ned and Micah will hopefully start to redress the balance but they've got their work cut out.
