Phil Hughes rip

Im not a cricket fan but feel sorry for the guy and his family of course

I dont get the national outpouring of grief and the cancelling of a test match though

when the build big buildings and bridges, some blokes fall of and die, doing theyre jobs, just like Phil Hughes

do they cancel construction for a week, is there an outpouring of emotion in the media?

No
Gotta disagree with you here nimrod. The fact they televised his funeral live on national tv shows how much this hurt the Australian public and cricketing community. Of course every life has it's value but the death of Phil Hughes has that extra level of sadness (for me) even if I didn't know him personally. It was quite strange (but understandable) to see the likes of Johnson, Lee and other intimidating pacemen breakdown.

I suppose in this day and age of multi-channel TV, people now expect their favourite channel to show key events and would be accusing certain channels for NOT showing it if they chose not to do so.

Remember in the seventies, 66% of UK TV showed the FA Cup Final.

A sad day for cricket and RIP Phil. However, I am not sure about one or two of the comments from the likes of Michael Clarke and others ( Aussies in particular ) going on about the 'spirit of the game', etc. These are the same people who continually attempt to 'psyche' out opposition batsmen with the most inane and intimidating nonsense aimed at getting the bowler to charge in and aim for a batsman's head on a regular basis. Sure, there is a place for bouncers and this was a freak accident, but for me it's been an accident waiting to happen and some of these idiots and their 'sledging' might actually start to think about the crap they come out with when they are stood in the slips or wherever. It aint banter and they should be brought into disrepute. It's got to the point now where it happens in every game and worse still the behaviour of some local club cricketers, who at best are self important amateurs, continually dish out this crap after every ball in games that actually mean sod all to anyone but their own overblown self importance. I hope these 'professionals' think twice about what they say in future.

I said something earlier in this thread , the recent ashes series saw the worst atmosphere and intimidation from the Aussies, Lehman stated his moto was whatever it takes , the captain was full of agro and threats of breaking arms. On a sports panel yesterday over here a brave panellist actually said that the Aussies are so Agro and maybe this will make them think more about the spirit of the game and the way it should be played.

A tragic, freak incident but one which was always a possibility and what would have happened if Johnson does Anderson intentionally hits him and a death results. Manslaughter ?

I think all countries have gone over the top with intimidation and sledging. England seems to have modelled itself on the worst aspects of the Australian team in a lot of ways. I do think that will change a bit.

I agree that cricket has always had that side of intimidation, as do most sports. Football used to be all about the physical side, and even now teams with less ability will use their physical edge to try and put an opponent off their game. What I would say is that Hughes seemed to be a very fair person and a true professional. He got on with the game and as far as I know wasn't involved in any intimidation etc beyond what you would expect. I know Clarke etc have taken things a lot further than they should, but his comments were about Hughes not himself, hopefully all can learn a lesson and use talent and ability over sledging and intimidation. The bouncer has always been part of the game and it is intended to cause the batsman problems or hurt them if they miss it - that's always been the point so this outcome was always a possibility.

Thank you. All countries do it...even England. Ask any test cricketer. Michael Clarke was just unlucky to have been picked up by the stump mic.
